AMD launches seven CPUs

AMD has revealed seven new processors to compete with Intel’s Alder Lake lineup.

The announcement was made yesterday in AMD’s Ryzen Desktop Spring Update video.
 
Will be interesting to see the performance comparison on these

I am still partially sold on the AlderLake concept, but it being "Gen 1" its not something I would want to adopt just yet.. I want to see it go through at least another 2 revisions.

I was looking at the I5 12400 from wootware. Do I wait?

Wait for the releases. Then see what costs are locally. You're in for motherboard, CPU and RAM so total package cost is going to main thing. For example, Intel would require a new LGA 1700 board, whereas with AMD you could potentially go for anything 370-series or up.

Yes. Wait

For a worthwhile upgrade from legendary i7 2600k, wait for Q3 or Q4 for when Ryzen 7000 series comes out.
It will have USB4, DDR5, and PCIe v5. It will be worth the wait, and considering the time you've had the 2600k, it's a short wait, and you will regret not waiting.

I see they did say the older broads are getting bios update. Well depending on how the manufactures feels.


I really hope its not going to be overpriced here. The 12400 is prices pretty damn nice

Lol did you just tell someone with a 2600k to wait to upgrade?

Well if he's looking at upgrading now, then waiting another 2 months won't kill him and he'll have more choices.
 
Ah, I see. Yes I'd wait for these coming CPUs, for sure. I really hope the 4500 launches at that price because man oh man that would be a particularly nice 6-core beast for the price.

Hmmm, yes and no.

I think PCIe v4 will be fine for a very long time still. USB 3.2 or whatever is also faster than most devices can saturate, so it's not like the Sandybridge days where you got USB 3.0, which was a very welcome upgrade over USB 2.0.

That said, if you want your next PC to last as long as your Sandybridge CPU did, wait for the platform change, and maybe even for DDR 5 to mature a bit.
 
With GPU prices being what they are, I went for the Ryzen 5 5600G last year and I frikken love my machine. It handles moderate gaming, is blazingly fast for all my work stuff and just all around performs super well. 10/10 would recommend.

Honestly that's the CPU I really want.....

My laptop has a 3500U and I'm always impressed with what the graphics can handle. That in a desktop package with a beefy CPU must be ideal.

I would wait for the reviews to land around the 20th. based on the performance of the 5600x vs the Intel 12400, the 5600 non X will be very close in price to performance to the 12400 at the same price. but you may find better motherboard options and lower electricity costs with the AMD chip. Intel alder lake boards are stupid expensive.

I don't think it's worth waiting for Ryzen 7000, unless you plan to spend about double the price of an Intel 12400

What seems to be happening here, is AMD will reserve the new silicon wafers for their midrange (starting at 5600x) and high-end chips (5950x) and their replacements in Ryzen 7000 when they go to 5nm. Then as they prepare for the next generation to come out, they will then use the 1 gen older silicon for lower-end products, like in this release.

It makes sense when they cannot buy enough of TSMC's latest wafers to meet demand across the whole product range.

Yea no way I am spending more then 4k on a cpu
 
I'm still using an old Ryzen 7 1700, no real reason to upgrade any time soon, unless prices go waaaay down...
