The ANC wants e.tv to help police arrest the criminals who threatened to rob World Cup tourists during interviews broadcast by the station recently.

The ANC also called on e.tv to do the "honourable" thing and withdraw its broadcast featuring the interviews with self-confessed criminals.

"These criminals are not only a threat to tourists, but to the dreams and desires of South Africa and Africa to host a successful soccer world cup," the ANC said.

The ANC can go to hell for all I care, that is what e.tv should tell them. They've allowed this situation to happen, if it weren't for the ANC's incompetence in running this government and therefore incompetence of the SAPS these criminals wouldn't be part of society. How did e.tv find these guys yet these SAPS is incapable of doing so, which it their job?

The police served subpoenas on eNews news editor Ben Said and reporter Mpho Lakaje in a bid to force them to reveal the identity of the two men, who appeared on air with their faces obscured.

In terms of the subpoenas, Said and Lakaje must appear in court next week unless they hand over unedited footage, the names and contact details of the men they interviewed, as well as information about the firearms shown in the programme.

How is this even legal? Can you really subpoena the press to reveal their sources, doesn't this detract from the freedom granted to the 4th estate? If this is allowed to happen then you can be assured these informants will not speak to these shows again. It infringes on the rights of journalists and freedom of the press, especially with regards to protecting their sources.

Again, if the damned lazy assed SAPS did their job then e.tv would not have had an interview!

This country is full of stupid people . So you want the government to just shout " Shoot to kill"? E-tv should take social responsibility .

Isede, we are not going to accept you on this forum because you do not want to accept us as Africans;)

You do realise that if they ban you it means you are not welcome here, right?

Apparently there are still old apartheid laws:erm:

I think SAPS is just pissed because E-TV highlighted their failures.

Has anyone seen "Louis Theroux - Law and Disorder in Johannesburg"? I mean, that was insane....the things that they showed there, the criminals they interviewed, and what was said....The government never knocked on the BBC's door for that one, did they? And that was screened in England. The fact is, the damage is done, and the only thing that would solve it is the people that are responsible taking responsibility. At some point the people are gonna get tired, and even in the Louis Theroux thing they go into the thing of people doing the police's work, 'cos the cops ain't doing it. Fact is, we are all on the same boat, we think we know what's the cause, but it ain't helping one bit. So all we can do is hope for the best, step up where we need to step up, and duck off when we have had enough...:p

Why doesn't the ANC do the "honourable" thing and allow Zooma to stand trial to "clear his name", and return Shaddy Shake to prison, along with Selebi and Tony Yengeni, ................ , and what about the presidents instructions that the Bling car purchases must stop, but didn't , ................. come on ANC, lead by example.

PS. I see "sroot" (aka Isede) lasted only 4 posts - two of the four posts must be in the trash can only visible to MOD's.

The problem is that the cops haven't a clue about how to catch these criminals and so these criminals will get away with what they are doing. If etv can find them why the hell can't the cops?

Etv should not be forced to give up their sources but at the same time it should be a given that as a good citizen those that know of a crime or intention to commit a crime by an individual or a group should report such offenses. It has to start somewhere. Should a tv station not report such things out of their own compulsions to see criminals behind bars. Etv is perfectly happy to take the high ground when reporting about corrupt officials in Government they should now take the same high ground and report these criminals to the police. I think if etv was reporting on terrorists you would see a lot different reactions. And there is the point, are not all criminals terrorists. They trade in fear and murder the only difference being terrorists do what they do for fanaticism and criminals for personal gain. We all seem to be loosing sight of something, these "sources" are criminals and should be sitting behind bars.

eTV know that to cover the story they would have to guarantee the perps (or is that potential perps) anonymity or obviously the perps would not tell their story.

What eTv has done is expose the potential for crime during the WC, and lack of commitment on the part of the ANC and SAPS to address the rampant crime, but instead just load up the security forces for the duration of the WC and once the visitors have left we're back to suffering the high crime rate.

Agreed. That guy interviewed was a psycho!!

Yeah, I agree with the OP that the SAP/ANC has issues that they should be blamed for, but there is just something wrong in my mind about flaunting criminal behaviour. "News" too often does things for ratings under the disguise of democracy and "your right to know".

The ANC and honorable in the same heading? They should set an example for us to see what how that works.

Why can't the ANC government do the honourable thing and deal with crime in our country. e.tv could never have interviewed these criminals if they were behind bars.

The honorable thing for etv to do is to honor its role as a provider of news to the public and protect its sources.

From a member of the publics p.o.v. we wouldn't have known about these criminals existence and attitude (ok, it would have been safe to assume there were people like this out there) and neither would the police but for etv. I'd rather be aware of the existence and intentions of these scumbags and have them walking free than unaware and have them walking free.

If the police and government have their way we will have the latter scenario because etv will no longer be able to build trust with criminals and be able to report this sort of thing.

It's the ANC's job to find and prosecute criminals not etv's.

These aren't 'sources' - these are criminals - or terrorists.

So is it alright for E-TV to provide criminals with a platform to make threats...? They might as well assist them commit the crimes.
I really don't get this part...

Thanks E-TV for warning us about these thugs. I'm sure they are not the only once who had the same mentality.

E-TV has just highlighted the problem. Why do you want to shoot the messenger?
