ANC asks e.tv to do the honourable thing

Not if you are a journalist. The are exempt because of Freedom of the Press. If a journalist interviews a soldier in the midst of a war who says "I am going to shoot some of the enemy who just happen to be citizens of your country" ... is that that journalists responsibility to put down the camera and pick up a gun and fight that soldier? Or is it his job to report the news? Why do journalists have certain rights of exclusivity or non-alignment during war... but now that they report a certain aspect of the "war on crime" they no longer have that right of non-alignment?

They are bound by a duty to report news to the public. That does not make them participants in that news, only objective reporters. It is in the public interest to get objective news and impartial news. How can we trust the news to be impartial if we expect the journalists to take sides and to be doing the job of crime-fighting at the same time?

Where did I say they should drop their camera and fight them ?

We arent talking about journalists coming across a scene in Afghanistan. We are talking about common criminals being interviewed in a house who are plotting to commit a crime.

How would you feel if a journalist was told by some thug that tomorrow he was going to highjack someone on the highway and then you discover that someone you care about has been highjacked by that criminal ???

If only criminals played by the rules, they dont, no political party can solve what is currently happening, IFP, DA, ANC, whoever, crime will still run rampant because of the poverty which still exists.

Flouting this on TV will only make things worse.

The SANEST thing i have heard about this yet! Thank you.

Same difference... it all has to do with journalistic impartiality.

I guess it would be OK, because I would have heard about it on the news and warned my family member to stay away. Unlike other people, I listen to warnings and stay well clear.

rubbish, that is exactly what freedom of the press means.

no, only if you had a duty to intervene or treat the person. an ordinary citizen has no such obligation. You do not know the law.

rubbish. Go and read up on Freedom of the press. You have no idea what you are talking about. Their right to publish is protected by the constitution.

Good luck convincing any judge that the freedom of the press needs to be protected when it comes to the protection and safety of citizens in this country. a warrant will most probably be granted,

Yup. Lets rather bury our heads in the sand an pretend it doesn't happen! Much better, all happy now?

Unfortunately the ANC isn't solving the poverty issue, the police are inefficient in many instances (yes there are still a few good men out there) and as such someone needs to let these bugger sin government know this is what the criminal underworld thinks of their governance!

and then the court case will be thrown out on lack of evidence. :)

exactly... if anything the e.tv special pointed out the scorn that criminals have for law enforcement in this country. it is a big joke to them.

And that is what the ANC wants covered up most, not taking these criminals into custody. Arrest those two and two thousand more will take their place!

what a great system we have!!
The fact is the media cannot withhold evidence from the court, even if it contradicts the freedom of the press :)

sure they can. It has happened many times. In fact in many cases journalists have gone to jail rather than reveal their sources because the issue of Freedom of the press is very dear to them. It is their lifeblood.

Might as well bin the entire constitution. *sigh* So much for democracy.

I honestly don't think the E-tv jounalists will go to jail over a bunch of street hooligans :)

about time South Africans realise that not all their constitutional rights can be met.

That's great! What's next the right to freedom of movement? Right to life? Maybe we should just sell our soul to China.

So much for having one of the most respected constitutions in the world.
