It's quite clear that while they may have told Mister Malema to shut up, they have no confidence that he will listen to them.

Or, to put it another way - they used Quiet Diplomacy against him.

I rate that they never told Malema squat. What they are trying to do is discredit the newspapers, i.e. only 1 newspaper reports that Gwede Mantashe said x and y (Gwede Mantashe probably gave that reporter a private exclusive) ... but now Gwede Mantashe is publicly announcing that he denies this and never said x and y thereby trying to make the newspaper look like a full so people take them less seriously.
