Cape Town - Trade union Solidarity on Sunday called for an affirmative action Codesa after former foreign affairs minister Pik Botha accused the ANC of lying about the practice.

According to Fin24's sister publication Rapport, Botha accused the ANC last weekend of violating the negotiated settlement of 1994 through the way in which affirmative action is being implemented.

Rapport reports Botha said during a discussion of Solidarity deputy general secretary Dirk Hermann's book The Naked Emperor that there never would have been a settlement if the National Party government had known that the ANC was going to implement affirmative action in the way that it is currently being done.

Rapport also quoted former president FW de Klerk as having said that the present implementation of affirmative action goes against what was agreed in the constitutional negotiations.

Solidarity's Hermann on Sunday said it transpires that the South African affirmative action model is incompatible with the 1994 agreement.

"This raises serious questions about the credibility of the 1994 settlement. If it is to regain its integrity, the original negotiators of the 1994 settlement will have to make public their intention with affirmative action stipulations.

"We also need a new affirmative action settlement; one to which all South Africans are committed. This can only be achieved with a new affirmative action Codesa," said Hermann.

Botha's attack on the way in which affirmative action is being implemented follows Minister Alec Erwin's remarks last week at the South African Business Club in London, when he said that affirmative action no longer applied.

Erwin, in a question-and-answer session, said affirmative action is dead in many respects and is no longer applied in practice because there is such a skills shortage in South Africa.

He was defending the country's affirmative-action policy, saying South Africa would have had a greater skills shortage if it had not been for affirmative action.

Hermann said the true objective of affirmative action - to correct imbalances - had been lost.

"We must resuscitate affirmative action. National consensus on affirmative action has been destroyed by the fact the process has degenerated into a race circus.

"Decisions are made on the basis of a race ideology that is more likely to harm the masses than to benefit them."

He said a new Codesa - Convention for a Democratic South Africa - on affirmative action will have to investigate ways in which the unmet expectations of the masses may be satisfied without alienating the minority.

As popular as Zimbabwean stories were, seems AA is dominating the news.

See signature. AA enforces prejudice.

The treats lay elsewhere.

Never mind AA and the race issues any more.

There is more of a problem now for local workers competing for jobs from the millions of illegal immigrants entering the country at will who will settle for sub-economic wages just to survive the tragedy unfolding in countries like Zimbabwe and elsewhere.

I feel there is great potential in South Africa if there was an adequate management controlling the situation. There should be enough jobs for all colour skins, but that just isn't happening.
By Management I mean The Government who often have some very skewed ideas of how to create jobs in the economy if at all.
So far many jobs have been created, but not by Government.
Government Policies have actually lost jobs in the economy. How many people walked out of Government Service for greener pastures?

I say it is the Management of the Country. In other words The Government who often have some very skewed ideas of how to create jobs in the economy.

The Gov is importing "skilled" staff for building the 2010 stadiums as there is none available locally, This does not compute! THEY ARE FOOLS AND SO ARE THOSE SUPPORTING THEM AND STILL BELIEVE IN THEM,

These imported people.
How do they count in bigger AA picture?
Or does AA not apply to them as they are foreigners.

The method employed in determining as to who should or could get jobs is wrong if a foreigner gets offered a job over a local person no matter what colour he is, even if it is only on a contract basis, but has the necessary skills etc.

About time Pik and FW made some sort of statement about the situation.
It was them and Rudolf Meyer with the members of the ANC like Cyril that worked out our Constitution.
The article asks for clarity from the people that made these agreements.
In the case of many of them I would expect they are too busy counting their financial windfall since 1994.

Some days I wish I could paint some nugget on my face and go lay claim to some shares in a Platinum Miner claiming BEE/AA whatever.

They are killing the goose which lays the golden egg. Qualified white people leaving, pushed by AA, racism, crime and such. One factor alone would not have made me make up my mind to leave, but combined, I am out of RSA by 2008.

AA is a way for the ANC to legalize racism and to serve as an excuse to enrich the top of the ANC in my opinion. It has absolutely no real benefits to the country or the people. Education and moral education is the only things that can improve the country in general. AA is simply keeping the spark of racial hatred alive imo.

AA/BEE is racism, period. Nobody can seriously dispute that. Another CODESA would be meaningless though because the ANC has no reason to negotiate now.

I think the crash will come after 2010. All countries that host a major (Olympics or SWC) have a major drop in tourism and income after the event. The skilled people are leaving faster then rats on a ship and after 2010, there won't be the investment to cover for it.

The only thing that can potentially stop it is a massive influx of skilled people and money from China/India/Cuba.

Should I be offended by this?

Naw, I know I got my work because I am qualified for it. :)

Ditto and fully agree. Each factor by itself is bad enough but the combination is just crossing the line for so many people.

From what I have seen, only permanent employees count towards BEE/AA ratings, Contractors dont add to the employee head-count .. hence the percentile gets "modified" ( This is my experience ... what I have seen companys hire contractors to get around AA, and only have few permanent staff members)

Dont know the Legal version, but this is what I was led to believe.

And then of course ol Vavi still spews forth that white people are to blame for the lack of jobs, remove the illegal immigrants and all of a sudden lots of jobs will open up.

First get skilled then complain

I heard from a recruiter company head in IT and Engineering that AA and BEE is/has become a lesser deal tho still considered currently sometimes, another yr or so and it will be something of the past tho. Apparently the sector is lacking skilled people so those ideals can fly out the window as well as fact they want people that know their stuff :P hrm.. they do go as contractors so maybe its what Ricard said *shrug*

True. Engineering skills are scarce world over! If you're Pr Eng, you get job anywhere around the world.

We need to hear more from these fossils. They call it like it is.

The number of world class medical people that have left is scary - public hospitals are falling apart and your best hope if sick, is that you have a good medical aid or a sack full of cash

Botha and his crew should have had a backup/out plan before trusting the ANC. What can they do now - take up arms in a guerilla campaign??
**idea mmmmm...**
