Two ANC members and a United Democratic Movement member have joined the Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal, the party announced on Tuesday.

The ANC's Mergen Chetty from Pietermaritzburg, former ANC Women's League treasurer in the Sisonke region Trish Crawley, and United Democratic Movement Umzimkhulu councillor Vuyani Zaza joined the DA's candidate nomination process ahead of the 2011 local elections, the opposition party said in a statement.

Chetty said his move to the DA was not about "self-gain".

"I am horrified by the collapse of the Msunduzi municipality, caused by nothing other than poor financial management and corruption, and I could no longer, in good conscience, be a part of the ANC," he said.

Zaza said the country's political landscape had changed and was "entering an era of a two-party state".

"I have joined the Democratic Alliance because it is the party with which I identify, as a party of government offering South Africans the only viable alternative," he said.

Crawley said she left the ANC because she could no longer be part of an organisation which "espouses cronyism".

And so it begins:)

You want the DA's ranks filled with opportunistic scumbag former ANC members
If you read their comments about why they are defecting, you'll realise that there are still some optimistic members of the ANC. There's only so much you can piss someone off before they lose it.

I'm happy they are leaving the ANC... but I'd rather see the died in the wool DA councillors getting the vote, not ex-ANC members.
Anyway, great news.

And they chose to defect at the right time too, with local governement elections lists being finalised even though they've been pissed for a long time.

Whilst its good news that the ANC is slowly falling apart, There needs to be some kind of quality control for whom the DA decides to take under their wing.

Falling apart??? It seems like the usual horse trading on the eve of an election.
Those who have been snubbed by their parties very quickly find new political homes. It's very opportunistic.

It sort of gives an indication of the DA's willingness to adjust their strategy in provinces where they traditionally battle. I hope for their sake the "died in the wool DA" folks have no issue with the new people.

Um... hate to point out the obvious... but if membership of the DA grows, it's likely due to people "defecting" from other political parties anyway. Replace the words "defected from ANC" with "joined the DA" and you end up with a whole new meaning without the negative connotations. And why would DA member's have anything against new members? That's how you grow isn't it?

I think this is great news for the DA.

You are assuming that every citizen is currently a member of a political party. There are a lot of people that are not politically attached and those can be called "joiners". Everyone else is a "defector".

Exactly. They normally regard them as idiotic sheep. What value could they possibly add?

A lot. All those mentioned seem to be prominent local/provincial members, so ANC strategy, any dirt they know, but most importantly, VOTES in their constituencies...

Why would the DA want old ANC morons in their midst?

Want em or not, their motives being sincere or not. There are only 2 possible outcomes for anyone in the ANC that started with a "Pure heart".
  • You will either be swallowed up by the corruption, become corrupt yourself and move up in the ranks. As Corruption begets corruption within a political party. The ANC is long past the saturation point where it is now impossible for someone with pure motives to rise up in power and influence.
  • Or you will simply give up on them, realizing you cannot do any good, and find another political home to try and make a difference.

Hopefully they are the latter. If they were corrupt to start with, or are corrupt now and then they moved, they are there to create friction within the party.

Being part of the latter I have not problem with them joining the DA. Saying that the DA should not accept old ANC scum is a little strange. Accepting an ANC minister that has proven to be useless is one thing. But accepting relative nobodies, that were not in a position of power and influence is fine. They may have been part of the broken machine, but they were not the driver.

So true I mean we all like to blame every individual in the ANC but like the police you do get good people!
