Cape Town - A Sunday Times survey has found that contrary to public speculation, the ANC looks set to win a two-thirds majority in this year’s elections.

The survey, carried out by Ipsos on behalf of the newspaper, found that the ANC has 66.1% of voter support, that 22.9% support the Democratic Alliance and 3.7% are in favour of Economic Freedom Fighter leader Julius Malema.

In the 2009 elections, the ruling party garnered only 65.9% of the vote.

While the survey was concluded before the release of the Nkandla report on the security upgrades at President Jacob Zuma’s homestead, it found that ANC-inclined voters felt the drama was more a Zuma issue than an ANC matter.

However, a survey last month by Ipsos found that half of South African adults believe that Zuma and his government are not doing their jobs well. These were the results of face-to-face interviews with 3 564 randomly selected adult South Africans.

So half of SA adults think Zuma and his government is not doing a good job but most will still vote for him and the ANC.....

It will be a very sad day if the ANC manage to get the two thirds majority. Do not think the country will be able to live through another 5 years of Zumanism....

Unfortunately, stupid voters are stupid, too. :(

They are taking too small sample sizes with a lack of demographics taken into account. This is stats 101.

Sadly this will forever be a problem in African politics in most African countries. One also can't ignore the peer pressure on the average unsophisticated SA voter from radical ruling party supporters.

I don't think so... Too much publicity around Inkandla and options to voters such as Agang and EFF

Impossible, the ANC cannot receive 2/3. The media and public opinion, especially since Madiba’s passing, have proved otherwise. The president is ridiculed with criticism and corruption, this man is a criminal. Should they receive 2/3, then an election audit must prevail.

Entirely plausible to me.
People are savvy enough to distinguish Zuma and Party. They vote for a party and policies, not a person. And since the ANC is seen by most voters as the party that best serves their aspirations (erroneously, in my view), most voters will vote ANC despite the rhetoric.

EFF simple represents the more aggressively Charterist / Socialist / Africanist wing of the ANC-voting public, so any shift to Malema is really just slosh that returns to the ANC as factions inside the party vie for control.

So after all their f/ups they are going to get MORE support ?

Either the voters have lost the plot or the poll is bollocks.

I'll go with the bollocks.

Considering that the majority of anc voters breed exponentially, it is quite possible that in the 5 years since the last election, enough of their spawn have reached voting age and this number could be enough to get 2/3.

You ascribe the f/ups to the party. Their supporters see the f/ups not as the product of the party but as the rogue actions of people who sabotage the party. Cleaning the Corrupti out of the party is an internal party matter and cannot become a pretext for withdrawing support from the ANC. That's how most ANC supporters see it, as far as I can tell.

It's been a while since I did maths at varsity, but last time I checked two thirds = 66.6% not 66.1% as stated in the article.

Hmm, Sunday times survey... Wonder how many people actually read the Sunday times? Surely they can't say that two thirds of the population will vote ANC?
