Doctors feel the same as you, that is why its taken them almost a year to do anything and that is why when they picket it's on their lunch break (I'd say lunch hour but who are we kidding?).

I get this really I do, but doctors not being paid enough isn't a sudden occurence though is it? It's been around a long time. If you got into medicine to make money (in SA anyway) then you made a wrong career choice. Shame.
Medicine is about helping people, but when there isn't enough food at home at the end of the month you have to wonder at what cost?

How much does an average doctor earn? I'd love to know. I'm guessing it's a ton more than your average Joe in the street. And if Joe can make it a doctor can.
The problem is if they don't get an increase there will be a mass exodus of doctors and no one left to help you when you really are bleeding out of your eyes. 37% of posts in government hospital are empty at the moment. Do you think people are queueing up for this torture? What will happen if that figure becomes 50% unfilled. What will happen when its 100?

37% of posts are empty? I think you've had your mass exodus. You can blame that on whatever, does BEE/AA come into play here? I'm not sure but if it does there's your answer and the doctors who strike can take a flying leap seriously. If not then I might have a bit of sympathy.

I honestly do realise it's a catch 22 and I'd like to think doctors moral standing is better than the governments and keep their strikes to their lunch breaks.
 
I was listening to 702 earlier today and some people said that they worked 24/36 hour shifts, omg i thought that was a bit insane.

I know nurses that worked that hours in PTA academic.... I just think that the goverment is taking advantage of the situation, they know these people took an oath so let them sweat who cares.

I read your article, and what it says is that she takes home R6500 AFTER her medical, tax, study loan etc has already been deducted. While her gross of R15,000pm is still underpaid I think a lot of people would be happy to have R6500 left after expenses. I only mention this because from your post it seemed like she was earning R6500pm, total package, including medical.

Also, you compared her salary with the bus drivers, but the R8000+ they're asking for bus drivers with more than 5 years experience would probably be the total package, and NOT what they take home after deductions... so they would still be earning almost half of what she is.

Yeah, but she is also putting in 200 hours overtime of which only 60 hours are paid for... 200 hours is basically another full time job :sick:

Yes, as I said in my original post, she is underpaid.

Hey, when I re-read the article I saw what you saw, but they are not giving the correct info either. They link to her payslip on the side of the article its here

It seems it includes medical and a room in the doctors quarters at the hospital (R644 p/m? or is it the R500 number?) it definitely doesnt include student loans or anything else. I would agree its misleading, but its still not much if you have any sort of family to support.

R5208 overtime is about R65 per hour if you work 80 hours, but at 200 hours its more like R26 /hr !! I think its more depressing now than before, R26/hr to work through the night or on weekends is appalling.

Volunteer Staff - ANCYL

The guvamunt should as part of their solidarity with the situation they created, mass volunteer the entire ANCYL to the state hospitals, NOT to give speeches but work on the floor, cleaning out beds, wards, buildings, assisting patients, etc. That will test out their mettle for sure!:sick:
 
How long can you go to jail for killing all of the anc to free s.a? The anc killed people to get to where they are now? So owning every thing needed + the warped sense of morals, where should one aim? Head shot or heart?
 
so the doctors have gone on a strike because of pay and working conditions and whatever. they should be more worried about their spelling as some of the placards they are waving around have misspelt words on them. i would be worried going to a doctor who writes out my perscription with spelling errors in it.
