Cape Town - The ANC Youth League has reacted with sharp criticism to Minister of Minerals Susan Shabangu's affirmation that mines would not be nationalised in her lifetime.

Releasing a statement after Shabangu tried to allay concerns at the annual Mining Indaba that there could be a shift in the country's mines policy, the Youth League accused the minister of misleading investors.

"We call on the minister of minerals to stop misleading investors, because these investors should also make input into the discussion document on the nationalisation of mines, which is going to be reality not in the distant future," the Youth League said.

It also accused Shabangu of trying to "impress imperialists", as she had previously told the Youth League during internal discussions that she did not disagree with its stance.

"The ANC Youth League is beginning to have doubts on the capability of Minister Shabangu to translate ANC policy objectives into practice in the ministry of minerals.

"The ANC has requested the ANC Youth League to write a detailed, coherent and concrete :Dperspective on the nationalisation of mines, and we have done that - yet a minister chose to jump the gun and make false assurances to investors and role players in mining. As disciplined members of the ANC, we will raise this concern with the leadership of the ANC."

The youth wing of the ruling party pointed out that the ANC is the centre of power and gives direction to government policy, not vice versa.

"The reason why the ANC Youth League has developed a concrete programme on the nationalisation of mines within the ANC, not in government, is because we understand that the ANC gives policy direction to government," it said.

Next week: ANCYL slams the newly formed council of mines' request to have a 4 hour public debate regarding state run companies and the age old performance enhancer ... bonus for profits, because the ANCYL is not prepared to debate in public AND reach a conclusion in public that can be challenged in public.
 
ANCYL make about as much sense as the gurgles and cries coming from the Mother's feeding room at the New Born Maternity section of Baragwanath. :D

Er... that's because it isn't ANC policy to nationalise their cash cows.

Looks like Julius wants to fire the entire cabinet and NEC. ROFL. He's gonna find himself in a pickle soon when the ANC turns on him.

The last ANC YL leader to be president was Nelson Mandela. The ANC isn't in the habit of pushing ANC YL members up their ranks, believe me. You need a lot more support from within established elements of the party, including the SACP. Just remember it was left wing extremists that ensured JZ became ANC president in Polokwane.

No, Julius is burning all his bridges and losing any allies he may have hoped to have. The ANC will turn on him when he's lost enough support, mark my words.

But you seem to be working under the illusion that the ANYCL is not being tightly controlled by the oh-so-wise people-controlling ANC who desperately need an insurance policy against COSATU's power.

Don't underestimate the intelligence, support and power wielded by Mantashe. Cosatu isn't the member of the tripartite alliance that I'd be keeping an eye on - at least Julius got that one right. The ANC YL, in all it's infinite wisdom, is distracting us from the real concern.

ANC welcomes ANCYL's mine paper

Johannesburg - The ANC on Wednesday welcomed the ANCYL's discussion document on the nationalisation of mines.

This followed a heated debate on nationalisation between the ANC Youth League and Minerals Minister Susan Shabangu.

The ANC said in a statement it would engage with the ANCYL "through proper ANC structures" and then express its opinion.

In the meantime, the ANC advised the public not to "stifle debate" on this matter and allow the ANC to talk to its youth wing.

The debate on the nationalisation of mines has become increasingly heated following accusations by the ANCYL against Shabangu.

The ANCYL said the minister "was misleading investors when she said the nationalisation of mines would not happen in her lifetime".

The minister made the comment at a media conference at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town on Tuesday.

"If these are really the views of the minister, she is disingenuous, dishonest and does not understand the African National Congress.

"In our internal discussion with Minister Shabangu, she said that she does not disagree with the ANC Youth League, but because she is now trying to impress imperialists, she changes her tone," the ANCYL said.

ANCYL president Julius Malema brought up the mine nationalisation debate at the weekend at a lekgotla where he presented a discussion document.
