The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria on Tuesday called for the suspension of 5FM DJ Gareth Cliff.

Comments Cliff made after the death of former health minister Manto Tshabala-Msimang were unwarranted, chairman Ghandi Magolego said on Tuesday.

"As the Mamelodi zone were are issuing a memorandum to lobby for support..."

Following the former health minister's death last Wednesday, Cliff posted the following message on Twitter: "Manto is dead.

Good. A selfish and wicked bungler of the lowest order. Rotten attitude and rancid livers --all three of them." The station could not censure Cliff as he did not make the comments on air.

The league wanted the radio station to suspend Cliff with immediate effect and possibly take him off air permanently. It intended to lobby the support of its national office to organise a protest march to the SABC to submit a memorandum on 5FM.

Meanwhile Theunis Botha, leader of the Christian Democratic Party and acting chairman of the Christian Democratic Alliance, said Tshabalala-Msimang's failures as health minister were ignored at her memorial service, where she was praised as a struggle hero.

Hundreds of thousands of people died as a result of her "callous disregard for modern scientific fact", he said in a statement.

"It does appear that hypocrisy is the accepted norm when someone has passed on. History however is not so kind when judging the legacies of those who are no longer around."

The ANCYL are clearly running out of important things to cause trouble with.

What next....
ANCYL trying to flex it muscles again...wannabe right wing militant wussies...
Really this organization could use its "clout" in more pressing matters like the electricity crises, job creation or service delivery...

I want Malema suspended at head of the ANCYL... we cant all get what we want.

I want him suspended too, long before this because he's an unfunny tard...

However over this I will fight tooth and nail to defend him just to annoy the ancyl ;)

Ensovoorts....

Ancyl and its leader remind me of some fitting cliches, eg. A pork chop short of a mixed grill, The lights are on upstairs but nobody's home......

Yeah, well, those of us without a political agenda have the power to switch stations.

(Too bad they're all terrible in the morning. :p )

You've obviously never been to the eastern cape. :o Since Cliff came along I've wanted to drive off one.

so.... 20 years ago Freedom of Speech was very important and to be fought for.

Today it is not so important and it is no longer necessary to safeguard it?

Have I got that right?

I suppose at least today we can insult the queen and not get our heads chopped off, or heap insults on Malema and not have moderators turn in our IP addresses to authorities. I think the ANCYL are flexing their muscles are trying to get media exposure thats all.

They only want him suspended now? At least it proves that Malema has a sense of humour about himself given the ragging he gets on the show.

I'd like to see how they intend to get this past the CCMA and the labour law.

His twitter post was in his personal capacity - so they have zero grounds for terminating his employment.

This is good news. The more the ANCYL demands things and doesn't get them, the less effective they appear. We should worry when they "keep their powder dry" and then actually get what they demand. Every time they fail, reason, logic, fairness, openness, freedom of speech and all that win just a little.

Getting suspended ANC style isn't bad at all.

You laze around at home on full pay, and the tax payers pay the non-BEE legal teams to defend you if you have criminal charges.

Would love to hear Cliff's response to this! The off-air one too. :D
