And I broke my camera

lol if ur gonna get it replaced then why start this thread

Who says he's gonna get it replaced  and besides your post re SA Camera and ORMS - they will send the camera to Cameratek in JHB for repairs so why send it from PE to Cape Town to get it to JHB? - more

Once dropped a Canon 35mm camera and the autofocus 'eyes' lenses got cracked - they fixed it - took about a week from Fotocats in Pretoria.

Ya whatever - both SA Camera and ORMS are in Cape Town and they will direct you to Canon JHB who will most probably refer to Cameratek.

I didnt say I'd be replacing it - that is up to the insurance company - not me. If it was I'd have bought one today and then waited patiently for the money.

As it is I have to take it back to the agent in the 2nd and they'll send it to Jnb for a quote and then the insurance company will decide. I've been warned that repairs could take anywhere up to 5 weeks. :(

You have your backup camera??

Else you can always get the 40D and then use the 400D for the backup.. :)

Sell your braai tongs for a start and then convince the missus its a case of life and death!! ;)

dSLR? Nope. :o

I was saving up for a 5D and getting anything else now is going to be a major setback.

Could possibly stretch to a 350D I guess.

Pity I sold the 300D 2 weeks ago for R2k with the kit lens and battery grip. Could have been a substitute in the mean time....

Yeah, it would have been a decent backup - bummer. :o

Why do you want to go from 400D to 5D? (not a big step up in image quality). I would stick with the 400D for a bit longer if I were you. Wait for the next big thing. An improvement in exposure latitude / dynamic range is what you should be aiming for. Maybe they have some new chips in the next gen. That's just my opinion. :p

Sorry to hear about the 400D, though. I hope no lens lens got damaged.

Time to get out the 35mm (20MP + 12 f-stops :D) But you would need a Nikon Coolscan5000 to get that out of your scans. :(

PS. Did you know that the human eye has about 24 f-stops of latitude? Now that's what I call HDR!

So the new lens that I've been waiting for since forever finally arrives on the 15th . . . . and I wont have my camera :(

Soddit - just had to turn down a job tomorrow. :(

Any thoughts on the EOS 350D as a backup?

I you are prepared to fork out the money I don't think it is bad at all. The 400D does have a few more functions that the 350D does not have but mostly in the function menu - I doubt if you will miss them though. If you shop around you can get them relatively cheap.
Have a look at the classifieds of www.outdoorphoto.co.za , maybe you can pick up a bargain 2nd hand there in your area.

I'm looking at [-]r2800[/-] r3800 (for the body only) from B&H Photo. I'm sorely tempted to beg, borrow and steal the extra 12k for the 5D :o
Aren't they basically the same... Just that the 400D has a few more MPs?
there are a few features that are different - 7 vs 9 point Auto focusing iirc and the 350 has a smaller screen as well as a second, smaller one.

I actually prefer that to the integration of the smaller LCD into the main screen but - you cannot beat the 2.5inch LCD for reviewing pics.

The big screen is great . . . until it breaks.

Got the quote - r2k for the new LCD etc.
