And replace it with what ?

Switching to the energy savers put a respectable dent in my monthly bill - 8w vs 60w for almost the same light is a no brainer :)

agreed.
we should be implementing this here.
could seriously aid our energy crises.

hj : the normal old fashioned lightbulb

Personally I think its a good idea, will force people to use the newer energy saver bulbs...

I don't think its a bad idea but I don't think people should be forced to do it.

well, if its forced the will be a mass market and hopefully prices will come down ? so its a win win for a better bulb that lasts longer.

well with our energy problems eskom had an exchange program. I wonder if our minister will hope on the bandwagon ;) and propose a similar timeline

Yeah well, all the ninnies here in SA that cant adapt to the african heat are gonna be buying aircons for their homes and all the compact fluorecents in the world wont releive that powerdrain.

Anyway, on http://www.eurolux.co.za/powersaver.asp you can culculate how much you can save. A 18w compact fluorecent running 12 hours every day of the year comsumes less than R4 a month.

...and you don't have to change them anywhere near as frequently as regular lightbulbs.

I replaced about half my lights with CFLs when I moved into htis house about 3.5 years ago. I replaced the first failed bulbs this month.

Australia Plans to Phase Out Incandescent Lights

SYDNEY, Feb. 20 — Australia intends to phase out incandescent light bulbs completely within three years, the country’s environment minister said today.

The minister, Malcolm Turnbull, said the government would use both persuasion and regulation to get the whole country to switch to compact fluorescent bulbs, which use less energy, as part of its drive to cut down on the amount of “greenhouse” gases, implicated in global warming, that it releases into the atmosphere.

“The most effective and immediate way we can reduce greenhouse-gas emissions is by using energy more efficiently,” Mr. Turnbull said. “Electric lighting is a vital part of our lives; globally, it generates emissions equal to 70 percent of those from all the world’s passenger vehicles.”

Australia already imposes minimum efficiency standards on many kinds of electrical appliances. A similar system will be applied to light bulbs, Mr. Turnbull said, and the standards would be steadily tightened to the point where it will ultimately be impossible to sell ordinary incandescent bulbs that meet them.

Are these the same aircons already littered around the world? Why should everyone else be comfortable apart from us?
