Can't say I blame him.. blowing the whistle on government corruption is a particular dangerous activity in a gangster state

Not to be mean but that's pretty impressive grouping. Normal criminals can't shoot for sh**. Definitely professional.

I'd think that the state wouldn't drag their feet as with the Guptas though.
De Ruyter is a beast of a different complexion mos. ;)

I thought that part of the reason the extradition was tricky (in this case) is because there isnt/wasnt any extradition treaty between ZAF and UAE... I think that is what I heard. Yes, and protecting your friends.

In the case of De Ruyter, I imagine the state could get the request processed faster, but I am not sure if he would be able to prove political persecution. I imagine he would need to prove that he is a victim of political persecution so the extradition request can be denied.

Haven't really followed the Gupta case tbh, but it's a given that certain powerful political figures would want to stall the extradition process.
No doubt pressure would've been placed on the NPA to slow the wheels of justice.

In AdR's case they'd probably have the docket sent to the top of the pile.
I don't think the ANC cadres have a leg to stand on though and these threats will come to nought in the end.

The former CEO has "disappeared" and as such investigations into corruption at Eskom cannot continue.

WTAF?

Same here, the Gupta stuff is a little fuzzy. Yes agreed... the ruling party would stall this case. That, and also the extradition case of Prophet Bushiri. I remember a while back, SA said they sent the request to Malawi, and Malawi said they hadn't received anything from SA .

Maybe De Ruyter doesn't have anything to worry about... whatever case they present, it most likely will not stand. He didn't break any serious laws from what I gather; they just not happy with the fact he isn't being direct (naming people, which can be fatal).

Hold on now,

Two weeks ago, ANC attorney Krish Naidoo said the party was preparing to sue De Ruyter for defamation.

...

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula is putting pressure on Naidoo to take the matter further, but it is easier said than done.

“We cannot find De Ruyter to serve him with the summons. We do not know where he is,” Naidoo told Sunday World.

Mbalula said the former Eskom CEO has “gone underground” following his interview but said they would “trace him, find him, and smoke him out wherever he is”.

the statement by Naidoo is odd. Sure, they would have already started to trace him? Yes, Mbalula, said that he will be traced, but there is a normal procedure here. It is the reaction which is odd. From a legal PoV, the only time you can claim that a person can’t be located is when you couldn’t trace the person. They will know which ports De Ruyter entered and exited. I doubt that De Ruyter pulled a John Doe, it is also not only him who will be traced.

Then again, it is the Sunday World which is quoted, to quote them,

Naidoo is growing increasingly frustrated as the documents he prepared in this regard cannot reach the intended first recipient.

“We cannot find Mr Adre De Ruyter to serve him with the summons. We do not know where he is, although we thought since he worked at Megawatt Park he should be living around Joburg,” said a frustrated Naidoo.

“First we have to assume that he is in the country and trace him. If an estate agent goes to his house and the door is locked and people say he has left the country, as a political party we cannot go to home affairs and say check all the ports of entry and exit. We do not have that power.

“We must try and trace him, if we cannot, we have to apply to the court to put an advert in a newspaper. But we must get some indication first about the whereabouts of this guy, is he in London, New York or Europe? We do not know where he is, but we have to pursue him because the ANC has publicly said we have to pursue this matter.”

I am well-acquinted with how lawyers trace and track people, and it isn't limited to lawyers. They don't give two schits about personal privacy laws and regulations. Why sent an estate agent to his home? From how I see it, it is all talk. All I can say is that there are various tracing agencies in SA and all over the world. Locating De Ruyter shouldn't be anissue;, they probably already know where he is.

As some will know, the Sunday World has already attempted at rubbishing the intelligence reports,

De Ruyter appointed private security company ‘without tender’

Former Eskom group CEO Andre de Ruyter appointed a private security company to guard power stations at a cost of millions of rand without going out to tender, allegedly after receiving “alarmist” advice from a private intelligence firm known to Sunday World.

According to sources, the power utility’s embattled former boss hand-picked ADT Group to do the job in July last year after getting a report from the risk company that there would be civil unrest at various power stations.

Based on the report, Eskom under De Ruyter awarded ADT an emergency contract. However, the unrest did not materialise.

This comes as security cluster sources told Sunday World this week that De Ruyter was not vetted, allegedly because he was dismissive of the State Security Agency (SSA) and its vetting processes, and enlisted the services of a Centurion-based intelligence firm.

Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena confirmed Eskom had appointed ADT, saying the “emergency contract” followed security concerns.

“The security of critical sites like power stations was increased in response to the threat information received by the executive committee. A three-month emergency contract with ADT Group was implemented to safeguard critical Eskom sites.

“The emergency contract, whose value cannot be disclosed, was within the ambit and provisions of Eskom Procurement Procedure 32-1034 and the National Treasury directives for emergency procurement of services,” Mokwena said.

ADT this week failed to respond to a request for comment.

Emergency procurement to protect company assets, don't see an issue with that. Why are they making this an issue?
