Android Auto (Google Assistant) vs Apple Carplay (Siri)

"That version of Android Auto should be basically identical to what existed before, but with one very large caveat: it’s not going to last forever. Google will sunset it as soon as the Assistant-powered interface is ready for wide adoption. Note that that could mean that both apps will coexist for a time."
Very strange indeed. All I can say is, I have Android 10, I have an Android Auto phone interface and Android Auto on my Kenwood head unit. I also noticed that article is almost a year old, I'm not sure how relevant it still is (or was).

I hear you. Look, I can't be without muzak and navigation- cos that sucks- so I guess I must just pull the trigger on an android auto unit and hold thumbs it remains viable into the future of the next few years.

Android Auto wireless availability will expand greatly with Android 11

Cable-free Android Auto has been around since 2018 but the list of compatible smartphones and car units has been limited to say the least. It seems this will change with the wider roll-out of Android 11 as Google will support any device running its latest OS and equipped with 5Ghz Wi-Fi connectivity according to its FAQ page. Note that EU availability will depend on local rules for using 5Ghz bands in cars.

Sony releases new in-car media receivers to help keep drivers focused on the road in SA

• Sony launches two new infotainment systems in SA.

• The systems retail for R7999 and R6899, respectively.

• These systems are designed to keep the driver's focus on the road.

Sony Electronics has unveiled its latest AX5550D and AX3500 in-car media receivers.

The new displays are designed to provide a safer and smarter driving experience for South African road users, combining improved touchscreen technology, class-leading build quality, and added convenience to make being on the road as enjoyable as possible.

The AX5550D and AX3500 will enable road users to navigate, communicate and play music without ever having to take their hands off the wheel, for a safer driving experience.

Key Features: AX5550D Bluetooth Media Receiver

The new AX5550D provides a hands-free driving experience, ensuring drivers stay focused on the road while connected to their devices. The new in-car receiver features an innovative safety design that limits distractions with lighter touch operation and improved visibility. This allows drivers to view details on their screen at a glance.

Additionally, Sony’s new media receiver offers comprehensive smartphone connectivity, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and WebLink Cast. The receiver is also equipped with dual USB ports for easy accessibility. The AX5550D has a 6.95-inch flush mount capacitive touchscreen with a flat, bezel-less display.

Drivers can connect their compatible Apple and Android smartphones to get directions, stream music, make phone calls or send and receive messages using Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which now supports third-party navigation apps.

Slightly OT, can i change the volume of maps on Samsung S10, to be different to other volume settings ? Bixby can be set like that ??

Slightly OT, can i change the volume of maps on Samsung S10, to be different to other volume settings ? Bixby can be set like that ??

If I run Android Auto through my cars head unit and adjust the volume while the assistant is talking (ie maps) it adjusts the assistant volume while keeping media volume as is.

I use my phone as navigation, I have it setup that it does not play volume while connected to car BT, as i want to listen to radio, and just listen to the navigation on phone. My system volume on phone is normally low, except for ringtone. Want maps to have higher volume..... hope this makes sense

CarPlayEnable lets jailbreakers on iOS 14 use unsupported apps with CarPlay

Many modern cars now come standard with CarPlay, a feature that allows iPhone users to interface with certain apps directly from their vehicle’s touch screen-equipped head unit. The only problem, however, is that not all apps support CarPlay.

Jailbreakers who want more out of their CarPlay user experience would do good to try a newly released and free jailbreak tweak dubbed CarPlayEnable by iOS developer Ethan Arbuckle, as it effectively lets iOS 14 users interact with just about any iPhone app they want via CarPlay.

Most of the apps that support CarPlay right out of the box are those that you’d expect to use while driving, such as calling, navigation, or music streaming apps – the ones that either help you get in touch with someone, find your way around, or keep yourself entertained in such a way that your eyes stay on the road.

CarPlay on a motorbike? Indian Motorcycle touts 7-inch display for Apple’s iPhone infotainment feature

We’ve been fans of CarPlay at 9to5Mac since 2014, and I started riding motorcycles in my free time last summer. So it’s an understatement to say I was intrigued when news of a new model of Indian Motorcycle with Apple CarPlay crossed the wire.

Indian Motorcycle’s new 2021 Chieftain Elite isn’t the first motorbike with CarPlay, but Apple’s infotainment feature is certainly less common on bikes than four-wheeled modes of transportation.

The Chieftain Elite ($34,999) is a limited run of only 120 bikes produced worldwide to celebrate Indian Motorcycle’s 120 years in business, and it features a 7-inch built-in display that works with CarPlay:

Indian Motorcycle’s easy-to-use, state-of-the-art technology found throughout the 2021 Chieftain Elite delivers a next-level riding experience. Taking center stage is Indian Motorcycle’s industry-leading, seven-inch Ride Command infotainment system. With connected services riders can view weather and traffic overlays, while Apple CarPlay delivers an easier, more customized level of control for music, navigation preferences, and mobile device information.

CarPlay in iOS 15: Announce Messages with Siri, Driving Focus customization, new wallpapers

Apple is upgrading the CarPlay experience with an update coming to the iPhone this fall. iOS 15 introduces new features for drivers, including Announce Messages with Siri, Driving Focus for handling notifications, new wallpapers for personalizing appearance, and even more.

Announce Messages with Siri

Apple has slowly been rolling out a feature called Announce Messages with Siri to more devices recently. Announce Messages first appeared on AirPods, where Siri can read text messages through earphones without looking at your iPhone or iPad.

Starting with iOS 15, CarPlay now works with Announce Messages for the first time.

CarPlay has always been able to read text messages aloud when tapping a notification on your car’s built-in screen. This lets you stay in touch with important messages when driving without taking your eyes off the road to look at your iPhone.

5 Reasons why you’ll want a new car with a voice-controlled Google Assistant enabled infotainment system

You might be familiar with Android Auto, the app that links your Google Android OS-powered smartphone to your vehicle’s infotainment system, but did you know the multinational technology giant has also developed something called Android Automotive?

The latter is an infotainment operating system (OS) that runs directly on the in-vehicle hardware (rather than on a smartphone or tablet), complete with various built-in Google applications and services. It’s an open source, highly customisable platform – which is good news for third-party developers – capable of supporting general apps built for Android as well as those already created specifically for Android Auto.

This means drivers will soon be able to use hundreds of current and future apps offered by Google, automakers and third-party developers, as long as these meet the company’s driver-distraction guidelines (and a few other restrictions).

So, what sorts of interesting features are available with this fresh operating system, which automakers that partner with Google can re-skin to their requirements? Well, it’s early days, but let’s take a look at five of the more useful Android Automotive features we’ve already identified:

1. Have a two way conversation with a virtual assistant

2. Control your car from your phone

3. Stream audiobooks using voice commands

4. Update your car’s system ‘over-the-air’

5. Find charging stations using integrated maps

Google Assistant Driving Mode to replace Android Auto with Android 12

Beta testers of Google's upcoming Android 12 OS have reported that the Android Auto for Phone Screens feature has now been replaced by the Google Assistant. Mind you, Android Auto is not entirely gone, but the new change signals a shift to a simpler approach when it comes to in-car experience.

If you are running Android 12, connect to your car's Android Auto and try to open up the "Android Auto for Phone Screens" on your handset, a pop-up message appears prompting you to try out "Google Assistant driving mode" since "Android Auto is now only available for car screens".

This means that cars that currently run on Android Auto will continue to operate as usual. Only the user experience on the phone is being changed. However, the new built-in driving experience for Android 12 will offer the same features as the Android Auto for Phone Screens and Google will continue to build on top of that.

CarPlay is more polished, that's for sure. Both systems are far too locked down imo, you sort of expect it from Apple, but Google is just as bad.
Yeah it’s like video - I mean you have such a powerful steaming device in your pocket and you can’t steam news. Worse, you can’t see what someone shares in a Teams or Zoom meeting on the screen. I mean yes it’s not safe to look at the screen while driving but honestly it’s that or the cellphone screen - I imagine the big one in front of you is safer, and it’s more of a glance.
As a last resort they could make it only display video or shared content when the car is doing below 40kph [post resurrected for my rant ]

Microsoft Teams is adding CarPlay support for joining meetings while on the road

Microsoft is rolling out an update to its Microsoft Teams application with a focus on additional hybrid work improvements and CarPlay integration. With CarPlay integration, which is coming this month, you can now join Microsoft Teams meetings from your car.

As first reported by the Verge, Microsoft has announced a handful of new features for Teams to underscore on a continued focus on remote and hybrid work. Coincidentally, Microsoft also revealedtoday that it is indefinitely postponing its return to office plans in the United States due to surging COVID-19 cases.

Among the new features coming to Teams includes support for so-called intelligent cameras, which are cameras that support things like gestures, facial tracking, and more. On iOS, Microsoft teams is also adding new quick access to chat, live reactions, and the Microsoft Whiteboard.

Microsoft Teams on mobile is also being updated to include quick access to chat, live reactions, and the Microsoft Whiteboard. This updated companion mode will also include easier access to controls like mute or camera on/off and will be available “in the next few months,” according to Microsoft.
Speaker coach, an AI-powered Teams feature that monitors your pace during meetings, is arriving in early 2022, and automatic lighting corrections for Teams video meetings will appear in the coming months.
Also starting in 2022, you’ll be able to integrate your Teams camera into PowerPoint, so your video can appear alongside your slideshow.

Better Apple CarPlay in your future?

Next-generation Apple CarPlay to bring more Smartphone control.

Since 2014, Apple CarPlay has become a must-have infotainment feature for many brands.

With vehicle owners demanding ever-greater integration of their device features when driving, there is a clear opportunity for Apple.

The technology company’s own automotive design ambitions have failed thus far. Its car project has stalled, but that doesn’t mean Apple is disinterested in developing better CarPlay technology.

A Bloomberg report states that Apple might be in the advanced stage of a significant CarPlay upgrade. This rumoured next-generation CarPlay system would delve deeper into systems data than before.

New Apple Carplay features?

Although screen mirroring is now an accepted reality for most car brands, there are functions that CarPlay cannot control.

The next-generation system could see users gain HVAC, infotainment and seat setting controls. For Apple, it would create even greater user convenience and loyalty, although the project is entirely contingent on cooperation from legacy car companies.

Apple would need to access source data for its next-generation CarPlay, where a conflict of interest with car companies could occur.

User data and in-car proximity marketing have been identified as potentially rich revenue sources for car companies. Allowing Apple to navigate into this space with an enhanced version of CarPlay could prove very costly over the longer term – with car companies providing the customers and vehicle platform but harvesting very little benefit.
