Android in for a tough time - analysts

This article contains too many fallacies:

• Apple dominating the smartphone market? Really? Not from a consumer point of view...
• May change the dynamics of the smartphone market? Yes, but not in a negative way. Don't see how Android as a whole will suffer because of an overall small (cost-wise) punishment to a single OEM, that in itself might be turned around.
• Google considering design changes? Why? It was the Samsung iteration of Android that was targeted, not the entire OS.

That the verdict does not come as a surprise to analysts shows why no one is panicking just yet.

Too much knee jerk reaction here methinks...

I've no doubt that a lot of execs in a lot of smartphone-manufacturing boardrooms are in a tizzy over this and some rather frenetic internal memos are being circulated. But for Android as a whole it could be a positive stimulus. I would say Android now - as of 4.0 and upwards - is quite safe from Apple's reach.

It would be nice if Google files a patent lawsuit over the Notifications thing, which was in Android before it was in iOS.

I agree with you partially- I just think that even with the fallout of the verdict, Samsung will push on stronger. I would have hoped that the USPTO would be taken to task over the entire farce that took place, but it seems that Google are fighting that battle. But for us as the consumer- I am happy that innovation, forced or not, has to be the way forward for all manufacturers.

Why do all these articles speak as if this is a done and dusted deal?
Samsung has already made notice of their intention to appeal this.
There were significant errors made by the jury.
This case is far from over.

Which means everything in this article is pretty much irrelevant until the case is REALLY over.

The problem with the jury result in America is obviously they are going to support Team America (or what they think is Team America, but what actually is Team China).

Yeah I thought the fact that the jury foreman was an American patent holder meant it was pretty much a done deal. And none of Samsung's counter allegations held, which is also surprising.

Most of the sources I read do mention that Samsung will be appealing the decision. It's also no use to pretend that Apple didn't just win a major court case ? Or at the very least are 1 massive one up on Samsung in this saga ?

Who's saying that? We're just saying that analysts are dumb. Samsung v Apple has nothing really to do with the future of the Android OS. Just as a lawsuit between Asus and Gigabyte would have no impact on the future of Windows.

I too don't get how a suit between Samsung and Apple would affect the android operating system:confused:.

If you can't beat your competitor with sales, take them to court. What fun will there be in sinking ure competition and being the only one in the market. Apple are complimenting windows mobile for doing their own thing but look at their sales figure. All these companies are using the open source communities hard work and their not giving anything back. Ios, mac os and android based on linux. And what is the verdict? Androids overall "feel" to much like ios.

The problem is if samsung are ordered to change the design of their handsets or android to change the look of the os that might filter through to the consumer as higher cost for their future handsets

“Companies such as Samsung, who we categorize as fastfollowers, have been viewed by the industry for their ability to quickly adopt the latest handset trends … rather than their ability to introduce fundamental innovation.”

Yeah, damn that Samsung for copying the S3 from .. uhm .. uhm .. yeah, nobody.

When last have Apple innovated except for the basic idea of the iPhone? Incremental changes to existing features isn't exactly innovation. Neither is stealing ideas from your own developers.
