Android 5.0 will be further optimized for tablet PCs, while Google will also integrate its Chrome system functions to push dual-operating system designs. Brand vendors can either choose to adopt only Android 5.0 or add Android 5.0 to Windows 8 devices with the ability to switch between the two OSes without the need to shut down the computer.

Nice move integrating with MS. I wonder if it will work the other way round? If not, doesn't that just open the same door which has lead some to run *nix instead of Windows.

So when most tablets are just getting ICS, another OS comes along, wouldn't it be better if Google actually chatted to the OEM's and said listen we are rolling out this OS, here is the source play with it, sort it out, start rolling it out on this and this date. That way there is less rooting etc...

Not Google dragging their feet. Try the manufacturers.

True, also some vendors refusing to release drivers for their hardware. I.e. my HTC Desire's GPU doesn't have official ICS drivers so hardware acceleration doesn't work as well as it should.

in agreement there, but cant Google do something about it? The support for upgrading to a new OS from the manufacturers are shocking.

I'll have to root my xoom at this point to get ICS, and why do I have too? All my downloaded apps are ICS complaint by now and somehow its not quite backward compatible as my tablet is slow. To be honest not happy with android environment at all and will rather settle for a windows or ios environment in future. Its a rant I know, but that is how I feel about it.

The manufacturers are all clinging onto their own customization skins, like HTC Sense, Samsung Touchwiz and Motoblur.

Some are really nice, while I really don't see the need for others. But at the same time it gives you choice, which is actually important to me.

The downside of a new OS is new driver support. There are a lot of different hardware involved with Android, which means a lot of of new drivers. Remember that ICS is not an upgrade, but a totally new version of Android, so the manufacturers must all write new drivers and support for their hardware.

Last, but not least, is the integration of their custom UIs with the new OS. It takes time to test it and unfortunately not something you can rush.

Fortunately Android 2.3.6 is great to use and very stable, so not really in a hurry to get Android 4. :)

what's to say that samsung or htc will treat their winmo devices any different to their android devices?

not being an ios follower, isn't it the case that the older iphones don't get the benefit of the new ios? i thought i saw such ramblings when ios was initially launched. though i don't know whether apple since changed their tune.

i have a nexus one and the original galaxy tab running ics (with no hwa just yet though there is a n1 rom that has it enabled). i reckon within the next 3 months both will be running as near official ics as possible. it is the very reason why i would stick with android. the work done at xda is amazing (though of course they do similar for winmo).

I've used Android 4.0 on my phone, although it's nice I prefer using 2.3.6, it's just faster and seems more solid. Although this is probably because my phone doesn't have ICS drivers for it's GPU.

I do agree and understand that support and drivers etc have to be updated. However from what I understand is that the manufacturers had access to the code before it got released. Or was that not the case?

One of my friends had a 3GS at the time and upgraded to IOS 5 the day it came out. So I dont know how far back apple dont support older phones. Difference is that apple controls everything from phone to software, so that makes it much easier for them and their users. You cant quite compare that with android though.

I'll brave rooting my tablet this week and see what happens :D

If updates is sooooo important to you why did you not go with a Nexus?

Vote with your wallet.

While true you must remember that iOS drops features in order to do this, not all the features that is available for iPhone 4s is on the 3GS. Also remember that Android does not add features, its mostly smoothing and enhancements.

iOS focus = Design, add functions as they upgrade
Android focus = functions, add design as they upgrade.
