Hi there. I am due for an upgrade on my contract now. I currently have a blackberry haha. I was really keen on an iphone but they are overpriced for what they are. I am looking at the android phones, I am really keen to get one, but I've never had one. I am on MTN, and there are 2 that caught my attention: the Samsung Galaxy S2 @ R199 on R100 top up (with 150mb data) and the HTC Desire X at R179 on top up (with 75mb data). (<R200 a month is my price range unfortunately...)

I want to try and figure out which one I should get.

The Galaxy S2 has slightly better specs, but was released in May 2011. The HTC doesn't have as great specs but is newer (released in August). I think the HTC looks better to be honest :p I also think that since the HTC is newer, it should get more android updates than the S2 would? but I see that the S2 can go to Jelly Bean 4.1 now, whilst the HTC is currently 4.04

What do you guys think I should get? I am keen on the software staying as up to date as possible, because 4.2 looks amaaazzzing. How long do you think the S2 will continue to receive updates?

They're equally good phones - but I'm biased towards the S2, only because Sammy's are the only Android phones I've owned and faffed about with.

Worked for me - I just recently got hold of the Galaxy Nexus (made by Samsung) and love it.

As for updates - the rollout is generally slow in SA from the OEM's.
But I understand that Samsung is more timeous than HTC.

How long those phones will be supported locally - not sure. Maybe another year?

If you like flashing ROMs and messing around with your phone in that light - updates by devs on XDAForums is the way to go and stay up to date.
Though initital ROMs may not be stable - but at least the good devs, cosntantly update and fix bugs.

S2's screen is amazing and UI speed is quick.
Between those two - I'd take the S2 - but only because its the devil I know.

I think the S2 might be bigger.
I choose the one that will fit my pocket, was more practical for me.

If you going to browse a lot and play games, go for the bigger one.

I would also go for the Galaxy S2, simply because the Super Amoled + screen on the S2 is still unmatched in the industry.

And since I happen to have one, I can tell you that is is still a fantastic phone!!

You won't be sorry if you get one, promise!

What is the touch on the S2 like? I've heard mixed reviews. How iphone-ish is it :p

Thanks for all your views guys. I note not a single htc supporter has come out :p from your views and my research, I've come to conclude - the samsung is a better phone. I think the htc is better looking. So now the deciding factor is staying up to date.. Is it true that v2.3 phones can't run apps anymore? Cos a lot of v2.3 phones didn't get any future upgrades and its kind of pointless having a phone in 20 months time that can't even do whatsapp..

Not true. I still download apps on 2.2.
There are that tells you only only android 4 and up.

I would also go for the S2. But Super AMOLED+ is not the industry leader, many people favour LCD IPS displays and they are beautiful IMO.

OP you should look at the iPhone 4 prices if you are looking at that price range.

Now you just hold on a second, although lately the rabid HTC fanboys are few and far between, we are here ! :)

The Samsung is the better specced phone, and is an absolute peach, so it is really hard to punt the HTC above it. I am in the same boat you are thoug,. HTC just put a little more soul into the manufacturing of their phones. IMO at least.

One area I actually really do prefer the HTC is actually the screen. Although they are good, I am not really blown away by samsung's AMOLED screens and the Desire X has a higher pixel density @ 233 vs 217ppi.

I would've taken the Desire X if I had to upgrade now, but I don't and I need to wait till April 2013 :(

Have to add, I just love HTC's sense UI. It beats the socks off Samsung's touchwiz.

Do you need to be on top-up? I'm sure you can get newer phones than that for under R200/month if you go to a proper contract...

Not exactly...

Besides, the desire X is brand new, and SGS2 still is a pretty formidable phone regardless of how long it has been around.

I see now, but it's specced pretty much the same as the old Galaxy SII.

I meant looking at something a little higher up, like an Xperia S, or one of the new Motorola RAZRs, if they're out already that is.

You can convert any contract to top-up after a few months... you just have to go in and ask them to do it.

Yea unfortunately the parentals insist on top up (to avoid those unexpected bills at the end of the month :p) obviously I would like a SG3 or iphone 4s or the like but I feel bad making my mom pay more than R200 a month for a phone, considering she has a cheapie @R100 a month and survives fine :p I dunno about the iphone 4 (not s). Its soooo old now and it lags a bit for a few of my friends who have it. Plus I think android is the future right now ;)
