Android soars, Apple down

I see so many people carrying Android tablets around these days. Apple is not an option due to price being a barrier - completely inaccessible to my colleagues and many people in our 3rd world suburbs and townships.

I used to hate vodacoms dumping of outdated tablets that have been superseded overseas with the later vodafone models. Now I appreciate these cheap tablets considering how much it bridges the technology gap. Access to email, internet, books, and movies. Apple is too expensive and it is in their DNA to be mean.

Jobs famously spoke out against being charitable and when you look at the tech landscape they do not contribute back much.

Companies like HP, Intel, IBM, Samsung, Nokia, Google , MS even can be tracked on their contributions to Linux and other projects and standards.

Apple makes so much profit and gives back so little.

Except that those same people who get those tablets are just sources of revenue to Google, nothing more. If some oke who wants to uplift himself decides to make a game, say flappy bird, and put it on Apple, he can make money even if he is in South Africa and he can earn a living, better his life and all that. If he puts it on Android, he can't because Google don't pay to South Africa.

So while Jobs famously said that if their product is too expensive for you, then it's not for you at least they are consistent to us South Africans, allowing us to partake in the possibility that is app store revenue. Google don't care at all.

I am in a unique situation. Pricing will dictate my next handset. I have reached a point where, i dont care to have the best tech and i need to save money.

I will either buy the next gen moto g or the Sony M4 aqua on prepaid. I dont believe in getting a contract anymore.

My priorities have changed and I want to save moola to travel, buy a place and get some work done (possibly)

I am not going to spend R600pm on something that I will lose interest in within a year.

Got some sources to back this up?

In my house, I have come to the conclusion to get Apple phones just because they last longer and I save money. My work pays part of my cell contract and hand my old phones down to the rest of the family which on their part takes out cheaper sim only contracts. Some of the phones are almost 6 years old and running fine without having any repairs done to it. I tested Samsung and find it to become unreliable after a while.

Apple: Quality... worth the money

Samsung: Batteries don't last... don't leave the thing on the charger overnight, the thing gets its balls in a knot and overcharges the battery and the thing swells up.

Development environment
Apple: XCode, which is very much closer to stuff I did way back when...

Samsung: Android Developer Studio: Its all Java, horribly over-complicated and messy and the IDE depends on Intel HAXM for emulation.

There's your answer. Just don't buy Samsung.

The thing is, in western markets, people have the money to afford the premium prices of the iPhone. With developing countries, like ours, the smartphone market is just opening up, and the entry level Androids are making an impact.
