I was looking around for TomTom South Africa maps when I realised that its not even out yet... :o

Then I found some interesting articles that some might find worth reading

http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2012/06/07/tomtom-for-android-release-some-say-why-bother/

http://www.phonedog.com/2012/06/06/why-is-tomtom-even-bothering-with-android/

From my experience its always been better to go with someone how has excellent coverage and updated maps like all the time! I was so impressed with TomTom on iOS (which is why i looked for it on Android)

So what are you guys using? Are you happy with accuracy and the maps?

I use google maps with its navigation.

Its a free app, dont see why i would pay for another app. Its accurate. You can now download maps to use offline. It has a traffic layer. And if you really must - street view.

+1 ... more accurate and up to date than my car navi system!

Google maps is far better than any dedicated GPS I've ever seen, as the maps are always up to date and it incorporates Google, so it searches the whole internets for what you want and gets you directions to go there, you don't even need an address. And it shows you a photo of the address you're looking for when you get close. Plus yes, it's free.

Only problem is the data use... Android wasn't really designed for use in the 3rd world where uncapped cellphone contracts don't exist.

Google Navigation. Bundled free with every Android phone, and it's almost certainly the greatest satnav software ever created.

(The South African POI database needs some work, but now that Google has enabled Map Maker for South Africa this should improve rapidly. If you see that your favourite business or whatever isn't on Google Maps, just go to http://www.google.com/mapmaker and add it!)

Look at http://www.sygic.com/en they use TomTom maps exclusively. I use to use them before Google allowed for caching. Now with the enhanced cache feature I have even less use for Offline maps.

You do know that you can now pre cache most of your maps on the new Google App?

Navfree
Pretty good completely free turn by turn navigation
Also, Drive & Walk (by Route66) comes free with the MTN version of the S2.

Google maps and nav is the best free navigation IMO. The only thing I have against it is that woman's voice guidance sounds like her mouth is full of food.

Yes I know, but then you have to do it before you set off, while you're still on wi-fi. If you're already on the road and want to find a place, you probably won't have the maps loaded.

can someone please enlighten me as to how you preload SA so this monster doesnt use data??

I dont know when offline maps are gonna be here :(

I found the navigation (Ovi Maps) on my Nokia N-series to be better than Google Maps. Quicker, better voice, more accurate. Having said that, google is improving continuously and I see no reason to buy a separate GPS if you have a phone with a nice large screen.

And how much space does that waste?

So glad I didn't get the One X after all...

Well for SA its hard to say as I did most of the routes I would travel including EU and NZ. All and all I have about 1.2 Gig's of maps on my phone.

But this will give you more or less an Idea

It limits 80 Mb per upload but I have 18 separate areas on my phone.

Make sure you have the latest G Maps, the in the app press menu button followed with upload, select area (Zoom and move the block till you cover the area you want) and off you go
