android turn-by-turn navigation - what's your flava??

For ICS:

Settings > Language & Input > Text to Speech Output

but you must get ivona from the play store first...

can someone please enlighten me as to how you preload SA so this monster doesnt use data??

I dont know when offline maps are gonna be here :(

I have no idea how do download the whole of South Africa map, but on the latest google maps version you can select and area to download - limit of about 60Mb. Which can actually cover pretty much most of JHB to Pretoria and quite a bit of the out-skirting areas.

80 MB limit per download and they can overlap + multiple downloads are supported.

yeah how do you cache a larger area?

EDIT: nvm ... i see your logic above!

Edit: Maximum number of tiles is not enough for me :(

Ah, I see now.

Out of curiosity, are you using Amy, Gwyneth, Kendra, or one of the others? :)

One little thing that annoys me with the Google navigation is that it doesn't really give you voice prompts early enough. For instance if I am on a three lane road and the next turn is on the right, it waits till I'm really close to the turn and then says "turn right." Now if I am looking at the screen the whole time this is fine, otherwise I am going to be missing a lot of turns especially if there is heavy traffic.

Well for SA its hard to say as I did most of the routes I would travel including EU and NZ. All and all I have about 1.2 Gig's of maps on my phone.

But this will give you more or less an Idea

It limits 80 Mb per upload but I have 18 separate areas on my phone.

Make sure you have the latest G Maps, the in the app press menu button followed with upload, select area (Zoom and move the block till you cover the area you want) and off you go

Cache automatically clears after a month though?

Well seeing that the new map+features only came out during Google I/O your guess is as good as mine

read it somewhere, no idea myself but am downloading several regions to see.
I won't mind if it just automatically updates regions whenever I am on Wi-Fi and I don't have to go select regions on a monthly basis or realize they were deleted when I do need them.

NDRIVE works good and has offline maps so need for data connection...

Well, this is rather frustrating.

I installed Ivona TTS, installed the Amy voice, downloaded the roughly 250mb data file, and set it as the default TTS engine in the settings menu.

But for some reason, Google Navigation insists on using the old voice that came with the phone.

The Ivona TTS seems to work in other situations. For example, if I enable "TalkBack" in the accessbility menu, that plays back using Ivona. But no matter what I try, it doesn't work in Navigation. I've combed through the settings in Google Maps, but I can't an application-specific setting for this. I tried deleting Google Maps' cache; that didn't work either.

I don't suppose anyone has any great ideas?

It's a long shot, but try matching your phone's system language under 'Settings' > 'Language and Keyboard' to what you have Ivona set to. Likely US or UK English...
