Does it work?
Specifically, how successful have you been in learning a language from it?

It uses a gamification system to progress which I've always been skeptical of in the past as it seems like another buzzword but I can see the efficacy of it here.

I've only used it for a few days in Spanish but so far I feel that my retention level is very high - maybe 80-90%. Anyway it's 100% free so there's no harm in trying it out; it's been coming in all the top 10 lists of 2013.

You want your alarm clock to save notes?
The stock alarm allow you to name the clock. "Note" was not the right word, but the same thing. But I think I'm derailing the thread with my opinion.

Wow. It's so nice to be able to exclude folders! I installed quite a few icon packs recently in various folders and they were cluttering up the Gallery. It's all clean now :).

So we are calling them icon packs now;). Yeah, my wife got upset with all the icon packs I had installed on my tablet too

Is it really that much better than the stock?

I wouldn't recommend Perfectly Clear as a main camera app. It's strength is touching up photos, which I do manually with it as needed.

For a dedicated camera I would recommend Cameringo or Camera Zoom FX. Both are excellent, and certainly better than stock.
