Android Useful Apps

Why pay R20k to spec satnav on a new car when you can use Google Maps, which also has the bonus of live traffic routing.

Wait. How does this work?

The radio needs to support Android Auto. You then plug it in via USB and it should work automatically.

Google releases Trusted Contacts, a location sharing app for personal safety and emergency assistance

Trusted Contacts doesn't deviate a lot from the formula: you add your closest friends and/or family members as trusted contacts so they can:

* Easily see your status: if you've moved recently or you're online, it shows you were "active recently" to stop them from freaking out if they can't reach you.
* Request your location: the request shows up on your phone and you can deny it if everything is good and you're just busy, or if it goes unanswered for 5 minutes, the request passes through and your last known location is sent to them, even if you are offline now.
* Share your location for a period of time: if you're feeling unsafe or you tend to go to risky places or stay out at risky times, you can choose a contact to share your location with for a specific amount of time until you're safe again.

AdBlock without needing to root.

DNS66 (Block ads/hosts via DNS) - https://f-droid.org/app/org.jak_linux.dns66

Been using this for a while (host only, DNS seems to slow things down a bit too much in SA) and it works well.

Just use the Brave browser. Identical to Chrome but with ad blocking. Best browser on Android by far imo.

There are modified Youtube apk's you can install that don't have ads.

So instead of having one app to deal with the ad issue I must switch to a different browser and deal with modified APKs?

I'll stick to host file blocking :)

you should be able to yes, in fact you should be able to log in to most apps with your google account. You might just have to verify it if you have 2 step verification turned on.

Automatic Call Recorder
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appstar.callrecorder

Record any phone call you want and choose which calls you want to save. You can set which calls are recorded and which are ignored. Listen to the recording, add notes and share it. Integration with Google Drive™ and Dropbox allows calls to be saved and synchronized to the cloud as well.

Not sure about the legality of this.

Edit:
See below regarding the legality.

Anyone know an app or method to scroll to the top/bottom of a web page with a gesture or remapped hardware button?

I'm not rooted though.
I can remember one gesture app I tried had a scroll to top/bottom action, can't remember which it was.
