Guess that doesn't matter when it comes to marketing.

Edit: my stats was wrong. Either way, point remains valid. You can't compare the two like this.

Edit edit: on second thought, my stats were right, IDC claims that Android has just short of 80% market share.

Fragmentation is a direct function of it being open source.
 
I have said it before will say it again - never buy a Huawei device. From my experience, you wont even get security updates forget the latest version of android.
 
Can't they compare it against Nexus and Pixel devices which are owned by Google?

Odd, I just got Android 7 on my Huawei.

Name & Shame

I blame the networks and phone companies.
Many networks (MTN/Voda/CellC/Telkom) block updates.
I had a Note 3, that refused to online update.
Had to go to unofficial Sammobile to get the update.

I purchased a Samsung Tab 10.1 WiFi Oct 2016 - on Android 6
Google launched Android 7 on Aug 2016 - why a new device comes with old OS?
Still no updates to Android 7.

Samsung S8 released with Android 7.0 when 7.1.2 was available - go figure.
AFAIK, S8 is still on Android 7.0 :confused:

Let's name and shame these networks and phone companies.

on apples ipad I bet you its a different story. Both my ipads don't get updated anymore.

What iPad's are they?
Mine also doesn't get updated anymore - and that's because its an old iPad 2 that doesn't support the latest iOS versions.
The fragmentation experienced on Android is due to the number of devices and hardware configurations on it. Its largely out of Google's control. iOS users are mostly updated due to Apple controlling both sides. Hardware and Software. A better comparison in this article is to compare Google devices against other Android ones.
 
I think manufactures rather want to release new models and grow revenue than supporting "older" models that make them no money.
Hence little motivation for them to keep releasing device specific software updates .
This is what happens when manufactures have bespoke android roms. If they do not update the rom for your phone, then you dont get an update.
My trusty old Galaxy S3 was officially no longer supported passed Android 4.4.4, but here I am running LineageOS 7.1.2 pretty much without issue.
The phones in most instances are physically able to run many generations on OS.
Manufactures are in it for profit, not for you to have a fully functional 5 year old phone with the lstest OS.

Unfortunately, many of these manufacturers make it very difficult - locked boot loaders / risky - bricked device to install LineageOS.

I'm running LineageOS 7.1.2 with June 7 security patch level on ZTE Axon 7 and it's excellent.
Before buying a device - first think I check is if LineageOS is available.

This. And why I will be buying a Nokia 6 as soon as it's available. It's the closest we get in South Africa to a legit pure android device in the absence of Nexus and pixel.

I hope HMD/Nokia continue to operate like that on all devices. Once these devices are in public domain, it could cause them to gain huge traction - thinking they could be number 3 or 4 in the next few years if they play their cards right. Most people would buy a Nokia over these unknown Chinese brands. Yes... I know HMD is Chinese!!

Lol wife's Huawei phone of over a year old just got updated to Nougat last week. What a dom statement to make.
Aside from new models of Samsung how many how many one year old samsungs do you know has Nougat?
