Android vs iPhone vs Windows in SA

Blackberry feels like something from the distant past now, crazy they still have so much traction locally.

I am surprised to see how much android dominates in the tablet space.

Always thought iPads led the way

It doesn't show which one is growing and which one is going down.

i would imagine android to rule the roost. especially seeing as you can buy a R500 from Clicks.

These Android/iPhone comparisons are never particularly good, fair or honest. You're talking all Android devices amongst many many different manufacturers vs. the devices of a single provider (100's of different products vs maybe 6?). Obviously the Android numbers are going to be significantly greater than that of Apple. I would rather say "how many Samsung S6's vs iPhone 6S's vs iPads vs a flagship Android tablet" for it to be a more fair comparison.

There an "other" in the tablet OS space? Who is wasting their time developing a tablet OS? Microsoft?

looking at that chart, I can't believe that Apple's 8% is making ore revenue than Android. I mean, how much is their profit margin? I should think like a thieving 1000%

They are actually doing an OS comparison, not device.
I blame the article here though (Or maybe Vodacom provided the details). 'iPhone' is not an operating system and nor is 'iPad'.

Profit on the iPhone isn't probably all that different from the flagship Androids like the s6 edge. It's the super cheap and nasty end of the market that will be dragging the profit percentage down for Android.

How can the 'Other' tablet market share be 0%? Are they just ignoring all Windows devices? Of which there are a great many.

It could still be a very small number compared to the others, in which case it rounds down to 0%.

I'm sure Apple profit is higher though?

Other manufacturers use current chips etc which cost money ; Apple have - smartly so - decided to be a generation or two behind the rest. The advantage is cheap parts and therefore, cheap input costs

Where do you get that idea from? Apple actually use a custom chip, arguably it will actually be more expensive than an off the shelf Qualcomm chip. Have you seen the spec for the 6s chip?

Well it's in their history.

I mean when the rest of the world starting embedding expensive 3G, Apple was - well - using old EDGE technology for a while still.

When we all went to 801.11n wifi, they used cheaper b/g .... and when we went to 'ac', it took them a year to use the same chip when they were cheap and plentiful.

NFC was around 5 years behind even Blackberry ; there were already 30 million out there before they jumped on board with NFC chips

It's not a bad thing - they just use old, cheaper technology and always have.

In the context of the ecosystem war between Apple and Google, this comparison makes perfectly sense.
