a smartwatch does exactly what the fitness tracker does.... and more.
you probably don't get a lot of notifications that you don't want to read immediately or ever? I love marking gmails coming in as read if I'm not going to read it in any case....
It could be that i dont get enough notifications maybe.
And i would just find it annoying that my arm is buzzing all the time, and the reason its buzzing cos i need to take my phone out to reply to a whatsapp message that i would have gotten to later anyways.
I'm also not keen on talking to the watch (just looks silly, especially when it gets your dictation wrong)
And of course the battery life on these things is just meh...its getting better...but meh.
I really wanted a smartwatch as soon as i they came out, but as time went on i calmed the eff down and released that the concept is:
a) still way too early for actual meaningful and practical applications
b) because of a), very gimmicky
c) for now (note, for now) better applied in fitness tracking and medicine type applications. (i read an article about how a dev developed a smartwatch app in conjunction with his brothers doctor to help monitor his brothers condition. The brother suffers from seizures and the watch tracks the frequency/intensity and an app records and reports it to the doctor when they have a 3 monthly check up. And that in turn helps them determine appropriate treatment. Pretty cool.)
IMHO, the apple watch is the gimmicky as eff, android wear is trying but its all over the place, pebble isnt as fancy but seems to do what it does pretty well. and the others like cookoo, cogito etc arent REALLY smartwatches... just watches with notification lights
and then theres fitness trackers. which are sort of no mess no fuss you get what you need stuff.
I'll give it another couple of years before i go full on smartwatch, for now i'm just eyeing a fitness tracker.
shoo, that was alot. sorry i rambled.
but, as you say... it boils down to individual needs at the end of the day.
