It shouldn't be that way though, we pay way too much for mobile internet here, only to get "okay" service.
No its not, in Manila I got uncapped 2mbs for under R200.
I for one would also like to see nicer data deals for android phones. My Desire HD rocks for everything (including the 2k plus work mail I receive everyday) fortunately I have it one wireless only at the moment and only switch on the 3g if I have something urgent I am waiting for.
Package doesn't have to be uncapped - I would be happy for a 500MB package at an affordable price (Would gladly pay the R60 the BB guys are paying)

I realised that SA is not yet ready for Android when took a Moto Milestone on upgrade a few months ago. I sold the phone in two months time cos i realised that it needs a data package to operate as it was intended to.
I bought a 2GB data package just for my phone. AFAIK all networks offer them. I think its perhaps your wallet that is not ready.
lol! Thats right, my wallet was certainly not ready, but overseas such smartphones do come with decent data included, anything from 500 to unlimited, so why dont we get it here? Cannot post links right now.

To give u n idea. The htc sense "fancy widget" clock thing, needs about 30mb a month if like it to refresh often. Those that say 75 megs is enough, have not properly used their phones yet.
I plow through around 1 gb of moderate usage.

Me too.
I've realized that you can't have a super duper smartphone (read iPhone 3G and now HTC Desire HD) with a paltry 30MB data bundle. Just doesn't work like that.

Indeed. if you uy a top notch phone you can't really experience it without going through mounds of data each month. e.g. Gameloft games download 120mb to 200mb on average
Is there a way to monitor usage on Android, or do you need a 3rd party app? At least at first I'd like to keep an eye on how much I'm using, so I don't use up my entire 110Mb bundle in a day or two... preferably by app, but even just an overall summary per day would help. Once I get a feel for how much I'm using, I'll have to start buying bigger bundles

3G watchdog. You can set it up with the amount of MB you are willing to use/pay for or have based on bundle.

If you're with Vodacom, you can just SMS "Mm" to 31050.
do these sms's cost anything or are they "free"...?

also netcounter to monitor usage.
netcounter also has a monthly usage monitor and you can set it when to start. so for instance with mtn contract on 21 or 22 whichever the day is. also of course you can set a warning feature when you hit x amount of data.
but like dj and kingrob say, these babies are meant to be like a mini computer in your pocket. and i use mine as such.
