After close to 14 very healthy years, my moms dog is close to the end of his days and after some family discussions, we have decided it would be best to put him down instead of let him suffer and die in pain.

He started losing hearing a while ago and mom called to let me know that since today, he is not able to walk and was moaning all of last night.

Very sad times...

What worries me now is that since his state has worsened, If I were to take him to a vet or SPCA, would they fine for animal cruelty because of his current condition? I'm pretty sure they would be able to tell that it's old age and we will be doing the right thing by taking him there?

Also what are the costs involved?

First time I'm having to do this.

No, they won't fine for animal cruelty.

Go to a decent vet, it will cost a few hundred rand as far as I know. As difficult as it is, be there with the dog during the event....

Take him to a vet, and be with him in his final moments, it really helps keep them calm when they're around a familiar face.

Thanks everyone... I will try calling the closest vet to make a booking with them.

Ended up going to Tygerberg Animal Hospital.

It was quick and peaceful but terrible having to lose him after 14 years of being an awesome addition to the family.
Also paid a bit extra to get his ashes back and should have that in a nice little urn by Friday.

That will go next to the ashes of my sisters dog of 12 years who was put down 3 years ago after a very lengthy battle against diabetes.

Struggling to keep my eyes dry in the office, sorry for your loss.

I have this experience coming up again and this time around I'm having the vet come to my home to do it. A lot of them are offering that these days because it keeps the pet in familiar surrounds so no stressful leaving home.

Much sad now :(

I'm sorry to hear that MH. My dog is my child. It's such a sad thing to do.

So sorry for your loss. But he is painfree now.

I am sorry for your loss, these guys form a huge part of our families
