Another camera derailment

Which one are you getting? The 5D?

BTW bwana, I just found out my presences is required at a wedding in S.A. in early March, so if you need anything bought in, let me know.

Getting another 400D.

Geez, I'm just reading through the 5D's specs too. Correct me if I'm wrong: The 5D looks more like it fits inbetween the 400D and 40D (it's slightly higher resolution aside)?

The 5D is a pro/prosumer camera - IMO its between the 40D and the 1D.

But it lags behind the 40D in some things, most notably the image processor is the older type II. Aside from that I guess the slightly fewer bells&whistles are probably what serious photographers want.

What appeals to me above all else is the full frame sensor.
How much are you paying?
Body only - $530 (r3600 or in my case ÂŁ265) - local price from SACamera r7800.

Have you checked out these guys? I'm not too familiar with the nicknames but if the 400D is the Rebel XTi then they have it for $401
Cant say I've ever heard of the but that price isnt bad at all - but when I hit checkout
A minimum order amount of 500 is required in order to checkout.
I'll stick to B&H for this - its convenient for the fossils in case anything goes wrong.

Aah, I remember reading that but I forgot all about that because the one I'm planning to buy is $502.

This is for the old man, of course. I haven't decided what I'll get for myself yet when I get a DSLR. For now I'm still figuring out all the bells&whistles in my Sony T100...

EDIT: anyway I'll report here how my shopping experience was. Nice thing is they have a warehouse in London too, so it should be easier for me to buy from them.

That pentax looks nice but considering the lens I just bought I wont be switching any time soon :)

On second thought you might want to look into them a bit more - http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7813_102-0.html?forumID=60&threadID=271835&messageID=2629689

However, YourDigitalElectronics.com's headquarters is either an apartment building, a motel, or else a vacant lot, according to Google Maps and Garstecki.
...
The other address on the YourDigitalElectronics.com Web site, a "logistics department" in Worcester, Mass., appears to be hidden under an Amtrak train track.

WOW

I thought their rather aggressive insistance on Western Union transfers was suspicious - I've never heard of Western Union. But then I started seeing Western Union signs everywhere.

This is was a while ago:

I wanted to place an order but ran into a problem. Only Western Union Money Transfer is the only payment method available. I live in London, so don't have access this (although I can pay by PayPal or VISA card).

Also, your FAQ mentions you have warehouses in both the US and in London - can I expect my order to be delivered before the end of the week? The "FedEx Express" option is not listed under you Shipping&Returns section.

Thank you

We cannot use Paypal due to our “Just In Time” (JIT) policy. As you know it takes up to 5 business days to withdraw funds from Paypal to bank account. We had fraud problems in credit cards processing and we have lost more than US $25,000.00 in shipping items ordered with stolen credit cards and after delivery we had to return the funds to their honest possessors. That's why we no longer accept credit cards for orders. The only solution for the moment is to receive the deposits through Western Union.

Better avoid them then!

I cant thing Western Union is too keen to have their reputation sullied by these guys.

B&H is looking better eh? Only 42 min till I can place my order. :)

While this thread has now been hijacked into a photography issue, I got myself a Canon Powershot SX100 yesterday for the more mundane happy snappy type pics at work functions, hikes, family get togethers etc where the 400D is a bit bulky to carry around.

I am majorly impressed with the picture quality also considering it has image stabilization I am getting better pics with it than with my 400D (bearing in mind I have budget lenses for the 400).

Now I want (read: life and death requirement) a IS lens for the 400D as this is the only way to go...

I actually wanted the powershot S5 but there is a bit of a shortage on that model so I opted for the cheaper SX100 (with the IS lens in the back of my mind)

For an all round lens, I am considering the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. B&H price R2688 (incl postage) compared to +R8k locally. What are the customs duty like on lenses imported??

EDIT: has anyone seen this lens Canon EFS 55-250mm F4.5-5.6 IS - can't find it at B&H

Are you getting these bad results in low light conditions because that kit lens really isnt that bad. You might also consider getting faster lenses (the 50mm f/1.8 "nifty fifty" is a must have if you dont already have it).

Here's cheap IS for you http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php?photo=1961&cat=503 - you just need to supply the 2l coke bottle :p
