Bring back the death penalty.

Police in South Africa say a British man who ran a nature reserve on a rural farm was killed in a robbery.

Capt. Phumelelo Dhlamini of the South African Police Service said Monday that 54-year-old Christopher Preece was killed in the attack at his farm near Ficksburg, a town near the border with Lesotho. Dhlamini said Preece had gone outside Saturday night to check to see why the power had been cut at his farm called Fleur des Lis when three men attacked him with machetes.

Preece bled to death. Dhlamini said Preece's 56-year-old wife was seriously wounded in the attack and is now hospitalized. The captain said robbers stole about $350 and a mobile phone.

News24 article :(

Bloemfontein - A British man who fell in love with South Africa was brutally killed on the dream farm that he wanted to turn into a nature reserve on Saturday night.

Chris Preece, 54, died and his wife Felicity, 56, was seriously injured when three men attacked them with knives and pangas on their Ficksburg farm, reported Volksblad.

The couple were attacked by three men who were believed to be from Lesotho.

The dogs were believed to have been poisoned after Preece took them out one last time that night.

He became worried when they didn’t come back and the attack took place shortly afterwards.

“The robbers threw her [Felicity] against the walls, slashed her and left her for dead covered in blood.

“And for what? A bit of money, a wallet and a few cellphones,” said daughter-in-law Jeanné Preece

“I tell people this wasn’t a farm murder! He wasn’t a farmer. He was in love with this land.”

Preece said her father-in-law wanted to turn his farm Fleur de Lys into a nature reserve and rehabilitation centre for owls and cheetahs.

The geo-engineering consultant was originally from the UK and worked in Johannesburg, spending only weekends on the farm, while his wife and relatives lived on the farm.

The murdered man’s wife sustained a skull fracture but was said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

The three men are still on the run.

The death penalty is no deterrent at all. Crims think they will never get caught

If there is a death penalty, at least the ones that do get caught, get taken out of circulation permanently. Currently, they just learn from other barbarians in prison and come out with a vengeance. In a way, it's a "school for scoundrels".

Well instead of wasting the additional time and money on the death penalty it can better to put into improving arrest and conviction rates for violent criminals. Now that would be an actual proven deterrent.

he was NOT a farmer.
No he wasn't, but it's an irrelevant fact either way.

Yet the death penalty has had a 100% success rate in preventing any criminal activity by those hanged until poorly.
But useless in practical terms.

I’ve met this man before. His name is Chris Peerce, a Principal Geotechnical Engineer in our industry. Sad loss and condolences to the family.

I walked into the office this morning and a close friend of his started crying on my shoulders. Thats when I heard about the news.
