Another Laptop Thread - First Timer

that Asus looks nice.. they do tend to be bulky but the specs are near perfect.. the Dell XPS range looks tempting but the XPS16 is pricey. Any idea when Dell's gonna ship i5/i7 XPS's to SA?

Not to mention that the smaller XPS machines have this little problem with melting and falling apart and Dell telling you to just deal with it.

It looks famn nice.

Has a tv tuner, USB 3.0 HDMI, GeForce GT220M, with 1GB VRAM, Altec Lansing speakers :) etc.
Their N-Series looks pretty damn nifty, haven't found anything bad about it yet.

The best and I mean the best business laptops, there are no better laptops, are made by Panasonic. They make hardcore Toughbooks (fully ruggerdised) which the US Marines use in Iraq (sand, heat) and in sub-zero temperatures as well for industrial and paramedic/police use. They also make Business Toughbooks called Let's Note. These things are very light, very well built (designed in Osaka Japan, assembled in Osaka) - don't flex at all and the 14 inch models can be dropped 78cm (shock mounted HDD), water can be spilled on the keyboard and you can sit on it (100kg weight resistance). 1.35-1.5kg of laptop with DVD-R drive built in and 16hr long life Panasonic battery. They're expensive though and you won't find them in SA. You can order from a site like Conics.net but if you're happy to go to Singapore or Hong Kong on holiday - you can often buy them there. Just email ahead to see if they have stock because they sell out in Singapore too. That's the ultimate best and most reliable notebook you can get for business use. It's not for gaming though - so no discrete graphics but you'll stand out in board meetings with a Panasonic notebook. No 1 business notebook in Japan, btw. Why do I punt them always - because ever since I bought one in Singapore in 2008 (CF-Y7 model), I've never used a better notebook. Anyway just my 5c.

They're also way above the R15 000 budget for anything remotely powerful.

Yeah but for R15K you won't get both power and high quality and if you're using it for business, you need reliability. You can get nice gaming notebooks but if you're after reliability and something light - some people would pay more. I would. I pointed out that they're expensive. I think a dealer in SA wants R53K for the full ruggerdised Toughbook for military/paramedic use but those things stop bullets so yeah, why not. The Let's Note range starts at USD 1700.
