Hey..

i got a weird problem... 99% of the time my comp runs fine etc... sometimes when i leave it on overnight downloading etc, i come back to it in the morning, and find that there is no power to the mouse or keyboard and the monitor does not show anything. After i switch it off and on again, you can hear everything running (power supply, motherboard, hard drives, fans etc) but the screen still does not come on or supply power to the mouse or keyboard... Temps are normal, nothing feels hot at all..

i then unplug it for a while (anything from 1 min to 10 min) and then it boots up fine....

any one out there have a clue what the issue is?

btw..

running XP SP2, Intel duo core E6600, ATI x1950xtx. 3 gig ram...

Its a 500W...

i dont think its the power supply, cause i have had this setup for a year now, and it only started doing this the past 3 weeks or so...

it could be power management
disable in bios and check tomorrow morning
or it could be windows powermanagement settings

but then again reading your post again, it does sound like the psu is packing up or m/b

Told you... you're psu is starting to see it's time, i mean... maybe it's going to the BIG pc in the sky... but just try using another psu... I would say get a cheap one, but i don;t think you're pc will start up ha ha...

well... i am running my pc now fine... has been on non-stop since i made the first post...

whats the average life span for a power supply, out of interest??

anywhere between a year to 3 years... my sisters pc's psu went and it's a year and a 1/2...

But It depends on the amount of power that the computer consumes... it's all a bit of a gamble... i mean, it could just clonk out after 3 weeks...

i took my comp in today, fitted another power supply and it was fine.. fitted my old one and then the computer also started up fine... wtf...

i think i am gonna have to take a gamble and get a new power supply...

any suggestions??

My specs are:
Intel duo core E6600,
Gigabyte 965P DQ6
ATI x1950xtx 512Mb
3 gig ram ram DDR2 800 (2x1 gig's, 2 x 512)
2 hard drives
DVD writer
3 extra fans in the case
Audigy 2 ZS soundcard

thanks

Could be overheating issue. The reason everything feels cold is because it was shut down. The wiring on your board may be wrong leading to a failure by the psu to turn off. I would disassemble and reassmble before getting acrried away.

Any feeback cable to the psu (if it is fancy enough) should be hooked up to the mobo (if it is fancy enough) and everything should be plugged in correctly. Make doubly sure.

You say it worked for a year. Well, then the jumper and cable theory is diminished, but did somebody perhaps work or remove any devices or upgrade the pc recently? Something sounds off.

Is the PC dust free?

the only thing i upgraded was the ram recently, from 1 gig to 3 gig. Otherwise the PC was cleaned but still gave the same issues. I took out the new ram and played a bit with the old ram, but the same thing happened.. so i dont think its that...

I felt the temp straight after it shut down, and it felt fine. The temp in the BIOS says 35C and i have 3 fans working the case without overclocking anything...

My problem is i need my comp for work, but i am 120 km north of cape town, so i cant just drive to the nearest mall and leave it there overnight to see if they can fix it..
