Another reason to buy a PS3...

And on a happier note:

EU slaps Microsoft with $1.35 billion fine.

Completely off topic and played straight into what I called you out for earlier.

I give up with this one *adds nk1 to the list*

Don't make this a Linux / Sun vs MS thread. I own an XBox and despise how MS does business (proprietary, anti-competitve, monopolistic, IP theft), Sony is none the better though far less successful (rootkit, proprietary).
You're quoting the wrong person. nk1 brought brought up the comparison earlier in the thread.

Okay most of your postings did very little to prove that you had anything but a Sony bias in this discussion, however this last posting is so blatant it just isn't funny.

As has been mentioned before, most of the Xbox 360 owners didn't actually care about the HD-DVD / Blu-Ray war. So maybe it's time to take a step back and read the thread neutrally again.

I am actually very happy that Blu-ray won (not because I supported either side), however I am of the opinion that Blu-Ray will never become a format like VHS, CD or DVD. Digital distribution is with in touching distance and even if we miss that HVD is way better than any other physical medium that currently exists.

I don't see Blu-Ray being a viable reason to buy a PS3. Which is what this topic is actually about.

And thats exactly what it is, your opinion! I however did see Blu-ray is a viable reason to buy the PS3 as I stated before - and that's my opinion.
Actually it's convinced most of my mates to go out a buy one as well for the exact same reason, the end of the format wars.

Personally I would think your glowing reviews of your PS3 are the most likely reason for your mates got PS3's. Which is why the community is so important to these guys.

It doesn't matter how good or bad a console is, if the vocal community loves it it will do well.

Back from the dentist...

If (read some info on the web) and it is a big if MS brings out a Blu Ray Player (possible) stand alone or otherwise, doesn't it make the whole argument moot?
MS will then have the advantage (again) as the manufacturing costs for the Blu Ray will be much lower, they will be in profit much quicker than Sony (again) so they will be able to lower the costs of the Blu Ray player and have a lot of promotions and then the 360 will outsell the PS3 (again).

Is there nothing else about the PS3 that is worthy of mentioning?
:D

I am not too clued up about BR, but could MS not outdo Sony by bringing out a BR version 2 player?

The fact that the 360 doesn't have a BD drive is a reason to get it, the problem is that, not having the equivalent price cut is a reason not to. ;)

@Sabagamma - Thanks Iwo, exactly this isn't a "MS vs OSS" or any other fake war, we're discussing game consoles and NK1 was the one who started to get high and mighty about "corporate ethics" which as you rightly point out, is not the point of the discussion, they're all just in it for our money. ;)

Seeing as you've gone there may I suggest anyone that wants to know about how MS feels about OSS go here http://port25.technet.com/
or watch this interview http://channel9.msdn.com/Showpost.aspx?postid=383939
You'll be quite surprised.

@ Sabagamma

They don't have to bring out a new version if a new version possible?.

The manufacturing costs already are lower than what Sony had to pay so they will make more money at a much faster rate than Sony, and that will allow them to bring out promo's for their Blu Ray player etc etc.

From what some of the better informed websites say, it is very unlikely that MS will bring out an or BR 360 or even an attachment.
But who knows.

Kage, not only is version 2 possible but the spec is already out!

And of BD players currently available only the PS3 is compatible, so it's a big finger to all those early player adopters.

Arnt there some other players that are also net active Doobi?
And therefore capable of upgrading?

They may be, I don't know off the top of my head, but the ones that are upgradeable are only capable of supporting up to profile 1.1. If you look at the two players Sony announced last week, the something 350 and 550, in the blurb it says something about them being the first standalone devices to support 2.0 (the 550 out the box, it comes with a 1Gb flash) The 350 apparently with a firmware upgrade and a 1Gb memory stick or something.
