Another reason to buy a PS3...

Ooh Kage, can'o'worms on the last line ;) I'll have my little say and and get out of the way of the PiSi3 boys *****storm ;)

@nk1 - you bought your PS3 at full retail didn't you? ;)

There's no doubt Microsoft makes F-ups, but you want to talk about evil?

Yes the PS3 is the only BD player that's forwards compatible, how about all those poor sods that forked out for "better" standalone players? Isn't it odd that Sony waits till just a week after the demise of HD-DVD to finally announce their new BD players that are finally forward compatible for spec 2.0, but at $500!

So they've done nothing but flood the market with obsolete junk just so they could push the price up once they've monopolized the market. As an evil genius I salute them for that. ;)

And don't come with that OOXML standard garbage. The OSS consortia want to corner the goverment markets by making MS adopt their standard. The truth is that in order to maintain document compatibility with some of Offices features there are extensions in the Microsoft format not covered by OOXML.

Office still supports OOXML as a format via plugins, it's just not it's primary format. Stop reading the Penguinista Paranoia.

Actually get your facts straight, ODF was adopted as a standard by the ISO body way before the 6000 page garbage proposed by M$. Explain to me why we need another standards.
Also do your homework, OOXML is the M$ shi#$y format, ODF is the Open Standards and is was M$ caught with their pants down trying to bribe the officials - Think Sweden and Australia.
If you think the sony branded stand alones are too expensive then wait for the Samsung or LG players.
Also odd is the sale of Cell Chip Plant to Toshiba, so Toshiba will be promoting the Cell in way or another. Business is Business.
Time to move along now because you are really sounding like a sore loser.

By reading his previous posts in this thread you'll find that he and many others were not banking on either side of the so called war of HD formats due to their support for downloadable content instead.

You are sounding more and more like a anti-MS crusader / Sony fanboy with every post that you make. You did not even address the points made about the merits of the formats themselves and are just continuing to slate one company and blindly support the other

What in the hell does Windows have to do with this? Btw, my Sony Ericsson cellphone got damaged a month or two ago - so I will never ever buy a PS3 because obviously the phone and the PS3 are so closely connected that they must influence eachother and their design. :/ Pfft.

Yes and funny how why moved from the reason for buying PS3 to attacks on the Blu-ray format and consortium.
But hey that's your choice and your reasoning, exactly the same reasoning I used with Windoze and not supporting anything from M$.

Why should I go on about consoles and their merits - you guys have debated it to death.

Read the edited version of my last post. I had changed "consoles" to "formats" after realising the mistake (clearly midway through your replying to it)

Let me elaborate on that: So far your argument does not extend further than: "I hate Microsoft and love Sony" and does not contain anything that might prevent you from being labeled as another fanboy.

Spot on.

I've worked with IBM, Sun and Microsoft over the last 10 years and I can tell you the ODFs entire plan in life is simply to try and dethrone Microsoft office .doc and .xls as the standard document format of business and government. Considering it's driven by Sun it's far from philanthropic.

But alas we digress, BD is still a doomed format, enjoy. ;)

And that's not a dig. Did bundling UMD with a PSP make it successful? It even had a monopoly from launch!

And yet after your hard work at all of these corporations you don't know the difference between your ODF and OOXML.
Speaking of downloadable content which you all propose as this miracle, can I download a full nature series from BBC assume at 5x30gig in South Africa for less than R550. I thought not, so don't go on about a doomed format unless you've lost touch with reality.
Another reality check, all movies studios are supporting blu-ray and as a proven business model is to release first to a movable media and much later as downloadable content.
Now with Paramount finally moving ahead, I'll be looking forward to Transformers on Blu - exactly how Michael Bay wanted the consumers to experience his movie...

..and likewise you've lost touch with reality if you believe either company gives a schit about South Africa or similarly disadvantaged countries. In case you were unaware, other countries (i.e. the major buyers such as USA, Japan, Australia, Europe) have excellent/cheap telecoms capable of supporting such a method of content delivery.

Uh ?

"Another reason to buy a PS3..."

That implies that there was a reason to begin with.

I have seen blueray movies on a flat plasma,I am amazed but yet i am not...SO all i can say is when the pc blueray writer becomes cheaper and the recordable disk, i will be getting one and not a ps3

So you're just supporting downloadable content for those countries.
But before you jump to conclusions about unlimited/cheap bandwidth do some reading about the proposed net neutrality laws proposed in the US.

Don't confuse the issue at hand. We are talking about success at large rather than in our domestic situation. I'll say it again: SA not being unable to take advantage of this method will not decide the outcome of the success/failure of downloadable HD content

As for the proposed laws for the US:
- they are not in effect and are still speculative
- the US is one country (yes, a major one, but still not the "be all and end all" of console business)
- this still does not lend any support to your unwavering love for Blu-ray over HD-DVD

I cover a broad range of technologies nk and knowing 2 acronyms for things that currently have very little impact on my immediate problems is quite low on my Agenda.

On the matter of VoD, actually yes you will be able to via IPTV. I suggest you go do some reading on it. IPTV is IP based NOT "web based" in other words it's dependant on the transport layer of the connection (the bit that sits between you and the internet), which is why it has to be implemented by the Service provider like BT or Telkom, not by an ISP like MWeb. In short - IPTV does not affect your cap. You can stream content, or Vod, All day to your hearts content.

And here's the other wake up call Nk, you're special. Fewer people in SA are going to be able to afford HDTV's than can afford monthly PayTV, so IPTV is far more relevant to South Africa than BD, and which is why Telkom are already financing 360's.

Just received the Resident Evil 3 on Blu, will post some feedback regarding the quality.

High Def. transfer is really good. Extras include Picture in Picture experience. Pop up menus during movie play works extremely well.
Well worth adding to a collection, this movie is already in the No. 1 spot at Amazon UK in the Hi-def section.

If RE3 is the No 1. seller in High-Def section, then I would have to say High-Def physical media is off to a rocky start... RE3 is an average movie at the BEST of times.

And on a happier note:

EU slaps Microsoft with $1.35 billion fine.

Okay most of your postings did very little to prove that you had anything but a Sony bias in this discussion, however this last posting is so blatant it just isn't funny.

As has been mentioned before, most of the Xbox 360 owners didn't actually care about the HD-DVD / Blu-Ray war. So maybe it's time to take a step back and read the thread neutrally again.

I am actually very happy that Blu-ray won (not because I supported either side), however I am of the opinion that Blu-Ray will never become a format like VHS, CD or DVD. Digital distribution is with in touching distance and even if we miss that HVD is way better than any other physical medium that currently exists.

I don't see Blu-Ray being a viable reason to buy a PS3. Which is what this topic is actually about.

Don't make this a Linux / Sun vs MS thread. I own an XBox and despise how MS does business (proprietary, anti-competitve, monopolistic, IP theft), Sony is none the better though far less successful (rootkit, proprietary).
