Wonder why people feel the need to shoot other students in the US? Bizarre.

CNN

There are about 162 registered students in the class that met in the large lecture hall.

A student described the classroom as having four exits -- two at the front and two at the rear.

"Witnesses say someone dressed in black came out from behind a screen in the front of the classroom and opened fire with a shotgun," Peters said.

At 3:03 p.m., NIU police responded, and four minutes later, the campus was ordered into "a lockdown situation," Grady said.

At 3:20, an all-campus alert went out via the campus Web site, e-mail, voice mail, the campus crisis hotline, the news media and various alarm systems, he said.

"The message basically was: There's a gunman on campus, stay where you are; make yourself as safe as possible," he said.

Rosie Moroni, a student at the school, told CNN she was outside Cole Hall near the King Commons when she heard shots coming from the classroom she was heading to.

The shot was followed by "a lot of people screaming," then people ran out the doors yelling, "He's got a gun, call 911," she said.

"It was complete chaos. It's very scary here right now."

By 4 p.m., DeKalb police had swept the area "and determined there was only one gunman" and that he was dead.

Grady said the man used three guns: a shotgun, a Glock handgun and a small-caliber handgun, and was still on the stage when he turned one of the guns on himself. The small-caliber handgun had not yet been recovered, he said.

The gunman started shooting with a shotgun, then switched to a handgun, said Grady.

 :(

Makes no sense. Maybe ask Canadians because they shoot each other up often as well.

its obviously because of the all violent video games they play and heavy metal music they listen to.. oh yeah, and harry potter + pokemon

"The right to bear arms" strikes again.

Lets see if that Constitutional right is going to change soon :D

Just doing such research on school shootings.

Started off here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_shooting

According this there have been since 1975 40 notable school shootings in the U.S. In that same time Canada had 7. Now when you consider the U.S has nearly 10 times the population of Canada it doesn't seem so unique to the U.S now does it?

Obviously this is just a start so I'll find some more 'solid' info later.

Good point Alan, but why shoot at all? Maybe I should ask "Why people shoot fellow students?" I mean, what is the point of this shooting? It happens in Canada yes, but why should it happen at all?

It's completely crazy particulaly the fact that it's so random. Those shot often don't know the shooter at all.

3 Factors stand out for me.

1) Mental instability.
2) The iconic nature of school shootings
3) Bullying especially psychological can really be brutal at school. Of course that's no justification especially when the shooter kills people who did nothing to them. Considering the person is unhinged in the first place it could play a factor.

I can understand point 1. Very little we can do to prevent that if it is the reason. :(

Point 2 - Well than why kill yourself? Wouldn't you want the drama afterwards of the police, news, etc.?

Point 3 - Understand High School, but University? Bullying is mostly gone at that stage and people just get on with their lives...

I dunno if they want to experience Bubba or lethal injection. Dying adds extra drama and intrigue as to why the person did it. It's a bit like martyrdom

Came across some immature brats at Universities before. There could be lasting effects from High school bullying.

But who really knows how much outside influences affect them. Bottom line IMO is you gotta be psyco to begin with.

It would be sadly ironic if you emigrate for the safety of your children only to have them shot up by some loon listening to too much Marilyn Manson or the like.
