Hoping the Vodacom guys can assist with this one please...
One of our users (Windows XP) says about 3 days ago his E172 started giving problems, error about VMC when he plugs into USB.
I checked, uninstalled the Lite, that was installed from the modem itself, and installed the 'full' VMC program, latest off VC website.
And, (after restart laptop, after install) as soon as you insert the E172 there is a message that pops up "Vodafone Mobile Connect..... c:\Program Files\Vodafone\Vodafone Mobile Connect\Opco\65501 South Africa\65501.XML... Program error!"
Doesnt want to open the VMC program, doesnt seem to install the modem. (can't find it in list of modems, so I can use MDMA or normal dialup conn)
Windows picks up new modem, but cannot use it, not even thru MDMA or MTN Fastlink program.
Any ideas wtf is the problem?
I uninstalled, and re-installed again, same story.
I tried a different Vodafone USB modem, same story with VMC.
Put sim in MTN modem, it connects no problem with Fastlink software and MDMA, so its not the modem or the simcard, must be an issue with VMC program.
I used the same installer to do a few other installs, so installer is fine, must be windows on this laptop that gives the finger.

Try re-installing Windows on his machine. Should solve it.

Otherwise you could try a system restore till 3 days ago?

he is about to get new laptop next week, so not wanting to bother with windows re-install, and all the other programs re-install now.
Just thought there may be a small issue to fix.
Maybe VMC doesn't uninstall properly, so doest re-install correctly?

Have you tried removing from the registry as well and not only normal add and remove ?

You may not be removing it properly when uninstalling. Apart from the usual add/remove programs uninstall, you may also need to remove it from the relevant devices in device manager (post #7 on the first link below. This would also remove the relevant registry entries) and delete the folder that's left behind in Program Files (second link below). Restart and re-install. Only re-install after restarting.

thanx for the advice, will give that a shot, see if can get it fully out of the system before re-install.
if not, will do format & reinstall windows, after he has new laptop

You need to completely uninstall VMC and use Huawei's brilliant Mobile Connect software.

VMC is too buggy for serious use.

It's one epic fail. They spent time trying to ensure other networks couldn't use it instead of making a program that works.

No, they spent time ensuring that there's a setup for each of the many Vodafone networks. Did you expect them to do the same for their competition?

You're wrong. The program has a routine that allows for manual entry of another APN, but it's been nobbled. As a programmer, you should know that making it simply work for any APN would be far simpler than providing and restricting access to a long list of APN's for each Voda compatible network around the globe. Just compare it to Huawei Mobile Connect, which has no such foibles.

No, I'm not. VMC has tons of XML tables, one for each and every Vodafone operator with custom settings for each, this actually came back and bit them not so long ago, but it's Vodafone's product and they decided that it should work for each of their networks without manual configuration.

Huawei Mobile Connect/Partner were designed to work with Huawei cards on any mobile network, but require the user to configure the settings manually.

Why aren't you complaining to them that HMC doesn't work with your Option or Novatel card?

They can have the voda tables and then you provide the entries for your own, but that was blocked. The code is there, you can/could see it. Why did they block it?? Well obviouslyt the devices can't be locked to the network so they found another way to frustrate customers wishing to try MTN or CellC. Anti-competitiveness.

On Huawei devices from MTN there is NO such blocker.

False argument here:- Novatel and others are free to provide whatever software they like. What's that got to do with Huawei and their hardware??

When Huawei make them, they aren't blocked either. Voda puts or gets the s/w replaced from the standard HMC to VMC Lite.

I had the same story . My Option Globetrotter data card from MTN could connect to any other network , providing that you do the settings yourself . But not my new K3520-Z .
It`s fully in love with Vodacom . Still looking for a way to bypass as my signal sometimes plays up on me and then I just used to insert my "backup" sim in and went on until the network issue was fixed . Any ideas ?

Manage Connections -> View -> New Enter Manual Settings

Its always been there

Why doesn't he use MDMA? If not, as they say in Russian "Toughski Shytski"

But it doesn't work.

Oh really?

As i test i JUST created a new connection using that. I entered Cell C's APN and some random username and password in the Authentication. And guess what? I couldn't connect(using my Vodacom SIM). So how can it not work?
