The reason for IE6 is very simple. It comes with XP, and you can't upgrade to IE7 or 8 without a legal copy of XP... you do the maths...

I think it comes down to Automatic Updates being turned off.

A nice poll would be to ask Win XP users to right-click My Computer -> Properties and state what Service Pack is installed - 1, 2 or 3 :)

Edit:
Oh, I see Gennath points to some answers...

Have it on a windows 2000 pro computer. Can't go further than IE6 on Win2K. But have Opera on it also.

IIRC, you can download and install IE8 without having to go through WGA verification.

I think most of the people still using IE6 either a) Don't have a choice (i.e. people using work PCs) or b) Don't know or care what a browser is.

Dont forget about users with SP0

Google throws its weight behind campaign to bury Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6 browser.
Aaah damnn... why did they stop at 6 ?

At work I discovered recently that the ladies upstairs do not even know the name of the browser they are using, let alone it's version. They don't upgrade because they have not been told to. That's why I build sites with a huge big IE6 notice that you can't ignore or close, ... but yet again the ladies upstairs surprise me: they simply scroll down and ignore the half screen height message that says "you are using an old browser, please upgrade from one of the following 4 choices."

I have IE 6 installed on Windows XP - because I need to test for those tossers still stupid enough to run a 200 year old browser! What? Do you also have Windows 3.1 installed? FFS, pissed me off because IE6 breaks everything.

In SA, I think there are simply too many people who do not understand the level of PC knowledge that is actually needed to securely and efficiently operate on the www. Many get shown at some point how to do a few things and then simply keep on doing it in that manner, never looking at, or keeping up with the changes in technology. Why should they after all, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". However, to know and understand that it is actually broken, you need to know a bit more than just the bare minimum. If you are not interested to learn more then what do you do? I suppose you dial a "nerd" (which costs money, and heaven forbid you have to spend money) or get your neighbour's child to come have a look, either way they never learn, and are often not willing to invest the time and money needed to get updated.

Well, that's my opinion anyway.

IE6 does not come standard with any version of Linux or MacOS.

I couldn't find it in my CentOS Extras repository. :)

IE6 is remains a scourge! I would happily see the end of it. Even browsing with FF there are still so many sites which are formatted for IE6.

I also see that the IE Tab addon for FF 3.6 is not supported :(

2014!!! You mean us web developers have to put up with writing parallel code for another 4 years!?

I can't imagine how worlds apart modern browsers will be ahead of IE6.

IE6 is entrenched in many corporates. If MS were to release a stand-alone IE6 package, maybe that would get the ball rolling on dumping this piece of dead weight into the abyss.

If that's your audience, then be prepared to support it until 2014, maybe even further, as there's no law saying people can't keep on using an unsupported browser. If you don't care then drop it.

To be honest, a skilled developer should be able to produce a version of their site that is awesome on new browsers but still degrades nicely in IE6.
