Suckers. Keep spending that cash on a AV. Whatever gets you through the day...

I dont spend, the free ones perform better than the bad solution you offer. Again, do you have any infosec experience? At all? Beyond installing an AV...

Then enjoy having to jump through hoops to activate it and enjoy a slower pc.

Now that the OP's question has been answered, we can move onto the debate of whether an AV is required or not.

If you're a highly aware user of the internet, keep your browser and o/s updated regularly, ensure that you have an ad-blocker installed, never insert USB sticks and external drives from others, and never visit dodgy websites (torrents, porn, casino, etc), in addition to being vigilant about attachments in email, you can probably get away with not using an AV. If fact, there is an argument that AV's can increase the attack surface for malware.

For the 'normal' user out there, an AV is is essential as a first line of defence given that most people are not careful about what they click on.

Ultimately, if your data isn't securely backed up, you're playing Russian Roulette because nothing provides absolute security.

Must Windows Defender be uninstalled (if that is even possible!) before another AV program is installed?

Nope. Nothing special for you to do - just download and install eSet, it will reboot your machine after installation and configure Defender appropriately (they're aware of each other)

Install Avast and run a full scan, then you will see how many it picks up.

It probably will. Now take a pc with Avast, install AVG and see how many it pick up. It will also pick up new viruses. But if Windows defender is not allowing the viruses to execute, so its working. What im saying is that its been 4 years and no issue's, so is my antivirus not working, please let me know. And i do backup all important data, 3 times over, cos thats the only way u can be sure.

Avira is free. ;)

My sister-in-law's name is Avira , don't think she is free.

Blu you don't need an anti-virus if you have a good firewall. I have not had a virus in the last 10 years just using MS essentials.

I have a fast machine, I am good, it keeps up with my computing needs which based on your words, are a teeny weeny little higher than yours :D One day when you work with important information, your knowledge will grow and you wont argue from ignorance. You have a long journey ahead of you in ICT. Good luck.

Avira scores well in testing, its a reliable free AV. I kinda just moved off it recently because I like to switch up my AV after every format and reload. So I always pick one of the 3 scoring AVs and test them out. Ive even got SophosXG as a gateway server. It caught something I had missed. One of my cheap IPcams was speaking via UDP to servers in India and China, so I disabled it.

This is the new threat - iot (Internet of things) devices being compromised and incorporated into a botnet.

What do you know, just tonight I got a prompt from Bitdefender to download the new Bitdefender 2017, free of charge (I've got an annual subscription). Firstly, that's pretty cool: other antivirus programs I've used have tended to force you to purchase the latest software separately (e.g. Norton).

The good news is that early impressions of Bitdefender 2017 are solid: the user interface is slicker and all the core functionality has improved. The secure environment for internet banking has improved (I might actually be able to use the new interface) and there is even a toggle in the settings to turn off notifications of promotions.

Now all I need is Bitdefender to give me one of their "Please don't leave us!" specials just before my subscription expires. Currently all the special discounts they're offering me suck, but I'll stick it out and play chicken with them.
