So I'm looking to try out something new or other free/trial antivirus programs for Server 2008 ... went over to symantec ... tried to download Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition for Servers ... 1.4GB!!!

What in heavens name does this program do for it to be that size?

Not sure. Its Symantec so it will probably contain trials to each of their products.

Most AV programs (definitions) are about 100MB.

The program's don't need to more than 100MB - Microsoft Security Essentials is what... 20MB (excluding DEFS) and it's amazing.

Symantec fill their programs with alot of useless crap (IMO) that just chew your PC's memory and spits it out for pudding!

AVG - Useless
Norton & Trend - Resource Hogs.

I HIGHLY suggest 'Microsoft Security Essentials'.
I work at an IT company and we use this on most of our clienst & it does the job as good if not better than Norton and Trend.

It is 100% free and allows you to customize many things like resource usage, scan flash drives & more.

Easy to use and superb protection what more could you want?

Get it here:

Agreed!

Even AVG is a joke... It looks so pretty but it nothing compared to MSE.

MSE is the perfect solution for standalone machines. In a business environment I do not think it will do a better job than say ESET or Trend.

Symantec Endpoint Protection (for Windows server) is actually very good.

AD integrated, auto roll out of clients & updates by computer name group, IP address range etc.
Additional security features (locking down USB ports by IP ranges for instance)
Group Update Providers (getting updates from specific servers - based on the client's IP address or computer group)
Exchange server integration
email client integration
proactive threat protection
network threat protection
firewall
intrustion detection
etc etc.
