Antivirus

Avast! Free

Its just that good.

And it updates often.

AVG, Norton, Mac Afee and Avaira are rubbish, stay away from them.

None.

Out of all the Windows machines i see for issues that have had virus software, all have had viruses, so they're pretty useless tools.
Virus software is mostly a waste of time. I'd also say that I haven't seen a virus in years, these days its all drive by malware.

Most of the driveby's use Adobe products, or Java. Disable / uninstall them.

- Disable flash, or install clicktoflash if you absolutely must use it.
- Disable Java.
- Do not install PDF reader / viewer from Acrobat. Use a 3rd party one.
- Install Adblock.
- Have common sense.

Microsoft Security Essentials is free, and light if you must use something.

Ninite.com is a good place to get a quick installer for basic tools if you need stuff on Windows.

Isheed_cn most probably only used Norton (bloatware) Antivirus before. However, this doesn't mean you shouldn't have antivirus software (they usually run unnoticed btw, so not sure how Isheed_cn can say he hasn't seen a virus in years, the point is NOT to see them till it's too late)

Eset NOD32 Antivirus (not the entire security suite) has the tiniest footprint of all antivirus software I've ever had, doesn't slow down my PC, always updated and catches stuff McAfee, Avast AND Norton can't.

Maybe the OP's PC has a virus with no AV, hence the thread.

Eset smart security. Works well and you hardly notice it.

We use eset endpoint no problems.
If starts dinging like crazy from a usb stick I just pull out the stick and tell the person to email the file to me.

I have ESET through Afrihost, but since I have now moved to another ISP, it is going to become more expensive. Thus I am looking at alternatives.

I use ESET Endpoint Antivirus at our company (50 machine volume license). It was previously called ESET Nod32 Antivirus. I'm glad to say that we have been virus and malware free for a good few years. Taking away admin permissions from the plebs helps too.

I think the only notification I have seen from ESET in a long time was from a flash disk.

Crazy how some companies have the DVD roms removed from new pc's, but flash disks are so much easier to spread crap with.
