My brother is on a TALK 500 package with Vodacom. He wants to do an upgrade currently but would like to know if there is a fee if he does a Pre-Mature upgrade. His upgrade date is 2 August 2014.

If there is a fee what is the fee?

tnx

Depends on how much he spends. I remember the fee is usually a lot lower if you spend R800 a month. Rather walk into a store and ask.

i he migrates downward i.e. lower package then there is a fee to cover more expensive handset subsidy. but for lateral and upwards i dont think so

Think Jam Wants to know if he upgrades before his term date ends. He wont be able to upgrade before August, as the System as far as im aware wont allow an early upgrade. However, he can terminate his contract early, but this would mean he would have to pay his monthly subscription in full for the remaining months, and then also pay a termination fee. Eg if he pays 500 a month and there is 5 months before he upgrades, then he would have to pay R2500 plus an early termination fee.

These days you can upgrade before your actual upgrade date, I can upgrade now and my actual upgrade date in in October. On the website there is a "Check for early upgrade" link next to your Upgrade Date. :) But alas I have no idea if it's gonna cost you more.

I did mine 2 years ago and I did it again today.

I had no extra cost two years ago.

I'll let you know if I pay anything extra when I get my statement.

That's very interesting then... Term dates are 24 months, where you can upgrade in month 21 or 22. As far as I'm aware, the networks systems wouldn't allow an early upgrade, so the above is intruiging.

May I ask what networks would allow early upgrades, esp from NU11, as you say you can upgrade now even if you were due in October. Thats 6 months ahead of your upgrade, which would be 3 or so months before your termination date. So that would mean you literally almost on a 1 year contract.

Just like the OP I'm also on Vodacom, thought that was implied?

I think it just works as it does with normal upgrade in the sense that even if I upgrade in October my contract still runs from 31 Dec for two years, if I upgrade now my contract will probably still run from 31 Dec 2014 to 31 Dec 2016.

If you upgrade as normal, ie when you are actually due an upgrade, you won't pay or incur any costs. I'm not sure now, but think there might be an upgrade fee or admin fee of R100 odd rand.

The costs I'm referring to is this:

If you are 1 year into your contract, and want a new contract, you can either add a sim to your existing line

or

You can terminate your existing contract, and apply for a new one.

Now if you terminate ahead of your actual upgrade date, then you will have to settle the contract I'm full ie pay installment over X amount of months that are left, as well as pay a termination fee.

As mentioned, Ill be very surprised if any of the networks allow early upgrades other than when it is scheduled for which is month 21 onwards... The networks are subsidising the free handset they give to you, and building the cost into your monthly subscription.

Clicking that link just shows "no data" on my one number and on the other one it takes me to the list of online deals. So I think it's borked/not yet implemented properly.

I upgraded 3 months early this time and last time. No extra costs involved.

I'm with MTN.

My upgrade is due in December but I qualify for a premature upgrade. Dial 082 1959 and the will be able to tell you if you qualify, they check your monthly spend or something like that. If you do upgrade they add the remaining months of your current contract to the new contract.
