Any idea when the network will be 'usable' again?

Its never been this bad

Its not just that its slow, but most international sites are timing out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oddly things seem to be fine all night through (been working since midnight) but at around seven in the morning, it just goes South. FTP and e-mail (from/to Germany where my server is) also work quite well... but HTTP to the same server times out often.

I'm getting timeouts, and horribly slow access to international websites. This is on Sentech 512 on the radiokop tower, which used to be the best combination for access.
Been trying to get through to there customer desk for the last two days and have had no luck.

Where is the communication on this issue? This is the worst sentech has been in two years.

Well I emailed support this morning and got this response
We are aware of an incident both affecting the nternational
Bandwidth. This incident is currently under investigation
and we would like to keep you updated by logging a service
call for you.

The MyWireless system operates on a shared bandwidth
platform and as such, bandwidth should fluctuate
accordingly.

Because of the fluctation of bandwidth, any speed queries
need to be monitored for a period of 72 hours on the
customer's side, with a minimum of 3 tests done per day.

In order to test your download and upload speeds, we
suggest making use of the Linespeed Meter which you can
download at http://www.tcpiq.com

This software will test your connection speeds several
times a day without you having to physically run the tests
and will provide you with access to a results page where
you can see your results.

After a 72-hour period, please login to the results page
and send us all of the information there. You can send your
results to [email protected] with your Service Call
number in the subject.

Please also provide us with the following information to
assist in the investigation:

1. Your Physical Address
2. Your Contact Details
3. Your MyWireless Username

We require that the modem be connected to a stand alone
machine running the Wireless Broadband Modem Dialer in
order to provide the below details.

The following information can be found by moving the mouse
over the signal tower on the Network tab of the Wireless
Broadband Status Monitor while disconnected from the
network:

4. Base Station Number
5. Signal Strength Percentage
6. Frequency
7. RSCP
8. ISCP

And on the the Device tab of the Modem Dialer Software,
please provide us with:

9. IMEI Number
10. Bootloader Version
11. Application Version

Please also provide us with an interface listing, achieved
by running the following command on the DOS Command Prompt:

"ipconfig /all"

12. Which Operating System are you using with which Service
Pack?

13. Which package are you on?

14. Are you using the USB, Ethernet or PCMCIA connection?

15. Are you sharing the device over a network?

16. Your POP3 server address (incoming mail)?

Kind Regards and Blessings,
Tristan

All of this sounds like a stall tactic (we need to monitor this for 3 days, blah de blah).

International speed

I just tried a 5 thread Usenet download from news.giganews.com and am getting approx 24KB/S on My Wireless 256, yet I can't even open google.com!

Sounds like a configuration problem to me.

Normal ST tactics. Wonder if 221 tests is good enough for them ?

Last 24 hours
Number of tests 49
Download speed 106.07 KBits/sec 13.26 KBytes/sec
Last 7 days
Number of tests 221
Download speed 109.51 KBits/sec 13.69 KBytes/sec

Exact same problem here all day today

Local is fine though

Likely the caching server configs...

Okay, I've done some testing, and it looks like email is fine, and in fact P2P also seems fine (!). However, HTTP on port 80 sucks the fart out of a dead cat. Right now I'm browsing via a proxy server set up on my work VPN, so international sites are fine for the moment, but it's hardly a long-term solution. I've tried browsing and downloading on international sites that run on non-standard ports and speeds are also fine, even for single threads. The conclusion we are forced to draw, therefore, is that the problem is either being caused by or related to the transparent caching server at Sentech.

Any confirmations, experiences which point at other possibilities, etc.?

Over the weekend in Jhb my 256 package was absolutely flying on all protocols. It was amazing. I've been using it in Cape Town now since Monday, and HTTP is utter garbage. P2P is going along at a decent speed (albeit that it downloaded/discarded 650MB of corrupted data, first time this has happened; I'm assuming that it's a coincidence). Local AND international sites are hideously slow, local sites never load to completion.

Running Parrallel

Is'nt it normal to run a new system parallel to the old one before the old one is dropped in favour of the new one?

I will definitely have to change to another broadband service. What are the others like? What will you guys recommend?

A simple acknowledgement on the bulletin board would be something - 'yes we have a major problem, we are sorry you are getting squat for your money but we won't sign up another client until our existing clients are happy. We expect the problem to be resolved by..... - in the meantime we have taken the following measures to provide at least a modicum of connectivity... '

Fat chance ! Telkom's arrogance must be contagious.

Try this kind of service overseas and the lawyers would be rubbing their hands in glee.

PS: No - I'm not going to give them all those details and wait 72 hours ! Bloody cheek - they are well aware of the situation.

After the last few weeks of this, I'm seriously looking at Datapro's new uncapped ADSL. Much more expensive, but if I factor in all the time I've spent in the last month managing my mail server, I'll take the knock. Time to start searching the ADSL topics to see what guys think of Datapro.

That would be normal yes, this is Sentech. Something else that would be normal would be to make some kind of announcement on your support bulletin board, to have it open for support (not just useless announcements) and to have said message on the support telephone line as well.

Now I'm wondering, at what point of non-delivery of services would one not have to pay for this month / for that matter, any month. If people require Internet for work purposes and suffer monetary loss because of this, would a suit be viable.

I just hate being left in the dark much more than the bad connectivity.

That made me quite nostalgic - was a question we used to ask frequently a few years back. Except it was about Telkom - and the answer was always along the lines of ' you will always pay regardless of the service quality because you don't have a choice .'

Perhaps Sentech thinks we still don't have a choice.

We still don't if all competing services are equally bad. It's like they're competing for a niche of failure to deliver service. Cpped, lie-capped, unavailable, off-and-on, expensive, hidden costs, zero support, no infrustructure, shaping etc.

I'd not move to another service, nor upgrade the current one. rather, I'd merge three or more to maybe get somethign passing for connected. So next step, likely adding ADSL.

terrible **** happens! and seems like all the time too! when the hell are these guys going to get their act together? I was just thinking of getting another mywireless connection for the home since ADSL is going down the drain come Nov. so freaking #%$^$*$#%! with internet in SA. So damn 5th world country! Ok...where's my heart tablet...need to calm down now...
