This is a problem i have been having from the begining - it gets better for a while - and then it goes pearshaped.

I get wonderfull speed when it connects - and then it drops to 0- sometimes it picks up a bit - but I have to disconnect and connect to cary on surfing. I have reported this three times already- no luck!

I have that a lot as well - connection just dies mid-transfer or whatever and I must disconnect/reconnect.
It's a real hassle if you are downloading things like the new AVG package - I downloaded a large file, got to about 85% and then it lost it. I haven't had the nerve to try again - airtimes precious - but the old version is about to expire so I will have to!

I get same speed degrade on VM - often followed the connection being dropped. I watch the speed with netmeter - looks like a pattern...

I could be surfing (Coz I use my phone to access internet) and if the signal on my phone drops and comes back up, I also lose my connection. *sigh*

Rather get a good Internet Download Manager, which downloads info in packet form, and your can suspend it for weeks if you like. Believe me using a cell for internet access is the pits but thats life...

Hey i also get this alot lately. I remain connected just fine and then it's like someone just blocks all my traffic...nothing comes through. Usually if i detect this soon and do the reconnect thing, i struggle quite a bit to reconnect [as in takes very long and even times-out without an error message].

This works, but with alot of "update" software you do not get the choice to use a download manager...you're bound to whatever your software uses to update. I know AVG uses it's own downloader to do it [and it doesnt resume], you can however download the updates via browser but this tends to be a hassle at times [resulting in you not updating at all]

I'm getting the same - generally after using about 4-6MB's of bandwidth, it would just hang... (I had the same thing on MTN as well a year or so ago - just after GPRS rates dropped to more affordable levels.)

Also, sometimes if you disconnect, the phone takes AGES to actually disconnect.

This only happens on the Cell-C network as well. Vodacom is stable, but just EXTREMELY slow.

I know a cell will suspend your GPRS session if it needs the slot for a voice call - could this be the problem?

I'd report it, but considering how I struggled just to get my sim recharged through the call center, I don't expect much to happen if I do.

Like to recommend one - and is it small enough for me to get through IT'S download??? :-)

Speed has been normal, i.e. <SLOW>
But the connection reliability has been the worst. I often have to disconnect and reconnect, just to get some data traffic.

My VM reliability seems to have improved :) Haven't had any disconnects in weeks. The graph on netmeter is always irregular though. Haven't had any data stalls either :D

Edit: Downloads peaked at 10KB/s and Uploads at 8.9KB/s

Its always been like this... we'll for me that is(get what you pay for I guess)

I would recommend Free Download Manager (FDM) if you're having a problem completing downloads

Install the flashgot extension first if you're using firefox

Do you use a phone as modem or a datacard - I am trying to establish if the speed and disconnects is limited to Huawei E620 datacards or not.

I use a 6230 and get disconnections. But I have seen speeds of around 180kbps - once - and then never again :)

Had some problems with connection but when it connected everything was fine.

Since middle December I can't complain 'bout d/l speed on VM - in this small town of mine I'm getting between 14-25KB/s and for me that's like being in heaven ! I've had some bad sessions getting 2-6KB/s.

Hope it will last !

I had major problems concerning slow speeds and regular disconnects with VM back in November when I bought my SIM, but it's been fine since December and I would say it's actually bordering on good at the moment ;)
