Hi all
Have u encountered a problem using Linux?
Tell me about it
please

My monitor gives me Input Out Of Signal Range when I try to play games on my 64-bit installs. I don't get that message on 32-bit installs.

Monitor: AOpen F1713
Distros not working: Fedora 8 and Sidux (both 64-bit)
Distro working: Debian (32-bit)

hhmmm....

ok so have you managed to solve the problem yet?

Nope. And the videocard is a nVidia 7800GS AGP card

That is a pretty broad question. It will depend on the distro you are using and the age of the distro. It is a bit like asking if anyone has a problem running windows (95,98,ME,NT,2000,XP,VISTA etc...).

no you see I got an assignment on Linux
I am trying to find problems that I can research and discuss
anything is welcome
I know absolutely nothing about linux
thats my problem
and I dont know anyone that uses linux
i started off trying to research white box linux
but now i am open to anything
cos lack of information

wireless freezing kernel on laptop at irregular intervals

I would suggest you consider using Ubuntu as the basis, since it has recently received a lot of attention with their latest release recently. It's one of the friendlier distros and is widely used in SA.

The main "problem" which I believe that people experience in Linux, is the more technical approach that one has to take to change configurations. It often requires doing some research on websites to find the specific ways to fix one's problems. However, this is a good way to educate onesself in the way your OS works. Modern Linux releases are making great improvements in this though, reducing the amount of fine-tuning which regular users need to do.

Have I encountered problems using Linux? Yes. Each time I've upgraded Ubuntu to a new version, a few settings are changed and I have to spend a few hours reconfiguring things. But this has become an enjoyable and educational exercise, since there are many people worldwide who've put excellent effort into making information available.

thanx
but its a bit late to change to ubuntu now
half assignment already handed in
and that discusses whitebox linux
this part is due on friday evening
and i am wayyyy far from finished
:(

The awesome thing about Linux, is that when you finally manage to solve a problem you have been having, you feel exceptionally leet as you have learned so much more in the few hours it took you to solve it. However when you finally solve a problem in Windows, you're generally just frustrated that the problem occured in the first place, and are no closer to knowing what the root cause behind it was.

I, personally, thoroughly enjoy solving problems in Linux. I got fetchmail working with my gmail account the other day. Not because I intend to really use it, but just because I wanted to see if I could :D

Ubuntu Hardy 8.04

Screenlets wont stick to same location after reboot?
Wireless wont allow Static ip to be setup?

Ubuntu 8.04 64bit. Nice OS, however some nagging problems are becoming apparent the more I use it.

For instance I don't know why it keeps dropping my IPv4 on eth0 or eth1 and I have to reset network settings for it to re-appear. (I have used two diff network ports on my Mboard and same result for both). IPv6 always remains though.

Also pppoeconf is rather annoying and slow to change for multiple accounts, they really need a better pppoe gui or something.

Repositories are problematic. I added the wine repositories and it keeps giving me a hash sum mismatch error when I try to reload or apt-get update. I change servers from South Africa to any other and suddenly all hell breaks loose and I have many errors with "reload" they also never have the latest versions in their own reps they are always like 2 versions behind even after reload and if its for a game you cant play it because you downloaded the wrong version for multiplay.

Loading libraries required for some programs and trying to install said program is really really frustrating. It says you need these libraries to install and work, you get these libraries...the darn thing still does not work....then you find you may have to "hard link" (WTF??) the libraries sometimes...I stopped reading after the headache got a bit much. Sometimes you think all is well and you wait 30 minutes....30 minutes!!!! for a source to finish compiling and then riiiiiiiiight at the end it says oh sorry for you, middle finger, go away and error something something but gives you no reason why

Oh and lets not get onto how the hell I figured that I can only share folders over the network if I install samba yet the option to share is by default there already :/ and then when I get samba theres a little icon at the top that i can click on but it reports a program crash when I do...at least I can still share folders now but I wonder what that icon is for if I can't open it lol

And suddenly wine stopped functioning properly and I cant open websites within wine...for instance on Steam it was working fine and then suddenly it can't find the websites anymore so no more update news and what not...also I no more can be registering with the silversands poker thingie

So with these problems right now I am a tad annoyed, but not to worry, I will persist....I am strong like Russian Bull and I'll hopefully triumph as a noob linux user

I...will.....not.....install.....my.....windows... ...Vista......dammit!!

This is me, quoted from another thread in these forums.

You could also mention that a lack of GUI (Graphical User Interfaces) causes a major barrier for Linux newcomers. Thankfully I have a small history with DOS so terminal doesn't bother me much, but it ain't too satisfying either. A hardcore Linux guy would probably dis me for saying it needs more GUI's but I don't care :p

By the way is it just me or did you start 2 threads on more or less the same topic? :p

I still haven't figure out how to hard link a library. Funny enough my Girlfriends brother phones me up yesterday and asks, "How do you hard link?". I was like LOL!!!!!! HAHA. Dam Linux forums can be very frustrating when people say...oh it's easy..just do that...and all you read is 1294u0u3rj13nfnefqfejnrg;jnsdf0gu024j[imsa9gui0[13i. At least there are many helpful Linux users though :)

Strange, I have not had a single problem with wine and 8.04. I used the normal repos with adept and just did the normal apt-get install wine, and it installed without a problem, maybe its an old version or something. Or just download the .deb package and install it no problems.

with pppoe there is a gui, its called gnome-pppoe, but it does not help you to create it, it just displays the files in /etc/ppp/peers/ and you can select on your provider and click start, and it will log on and of course sudo cp dsl-provider <new name> works like a charm and is no hassle, have to admit, I also complained about lack of gui for pppoe, then discovered gnome-pppoe and guess what, now I still prefer doing it via terminal
