Hi all
Have u encountered a problem using Linux?
Tell me about it
please
Ubuntu 8.04 64bit. Nice OS, however some nagging problems are becoming apparent the more I use it.
For instance I don't know why it keeps dropping my IPv4 on eth0 or eth1 and I have to reset network settings for it to re-appear. (I have used two diff network ports on my Mboard and same result for both). IPv6 always remains though.
Also pppoeconf is rather annoying and slow to change for multiple accounts, they really need a better pppoe gui or something.
Repositories are problematic. I added the wine repositories and it keeps giving me a hash sum mismatch error when I try to reload or apt-get update. I change servers from South Africa to any other and suddenly all hell breaks loose and I have many errors with "reload" they also never have the latest versions in their own reps they are always like 2 versions behind even after reload and if its for a game you cant play it because you downloaded the wrong version for multiplay.
Loading libraries required for some programs and trying to install said program is really really frustrating. It says you need these libraries to install and work, you get these libraries...the darn thing still does not work....then you find you may have to "hard link" (WTF??) the libraries sometimes...I stopped reading after the headache got a bit much. Sometimes you think all is well and you wait 30 minutes....30 minutes!!!! for a source to finish compiling and then riiiiiiiiight at the end it says oh sorry for you, middle finger, go away and error something something but gives you no reason why
Oh and lets not get onto how the hell I figured that I can only share folders over the network if I install samba yet the option to share is by default there already :/ and then when I get samba theres a little icon at the top that i can click on but it reports a program crash when I do...at least I can still share folders now but I wonder what that icon is for if I can't open it lol
And suddenly wine stopped functioning properly and I cant open websites within wine...for instance on Steam it was working fine and then suddenly it can't find the websites anymore so no more update news and what not...also I no more can be registering with the silversands poker thingie
So with these problems right now I am a tad annoyed, but not to worry, I will persist....I am strong like Russian Bull and I'll hopefully triumph as a noob linux user
I...will.....not.....install.....my.....windows... ...Vista......dammit!!
This is me, quoted from another thread in these forums.
You could also mention that a lack of GUI (Graphical User Interfaces) causes a major barrier for Linux newcomers. Thankfully I have a small history with DOS so terminal doesn't bother me much, but it ain't too satisfying either. A hardcore Linux guy would probably dis me for saying it needs more GUI's but I don't care
By the way is it just me or did you start 2 threads on more or less the same topic?![]()
I still haven't figure out how to hard link a library. Funny enough my Girlfriends brother phones me up yesterday and asks, "How do you hard link?". I was like LOL!!!!!! HAHA. Dam Linux forums can be very frustrating when people say...oh it's easy..just do that...and all you read is 1294u0u3rj13nfnefqfejnrg;jnsdf0gu024j[imsa9gui0[13i. At least there are many helpful Linux users though![]()
