I worked in a team of 7 developers. We now have 2 after the pandemic. The work load is beyond me. We are trying. We can not complain.
We had about 25 developers who were let go, they all have something new. I think IT is the space you need to be in.
Unfortunately this year is going to be a terrible year for a lot of job seekers and freelancers. I'm just grateful I haven't been affected and hope we can get some sort of relief soon from the pandemic soon...the ANC isn't helping either when it comes to jobs.

What do you do?

2021 - Still looking for employment despite my experience and numerous successes as a strategic marketing specialist...

It's been a humbling couple of months

Does anyone have contact with or work for a digital marketing agency?

I have a portfolio of my independent work as well.

Have you tried using the telephone if the digital routes aren’t working?
Talking to people on the phone yields far better success in my experience. You’ll reach ears as apposed to your mail that ends up not being read.
Offer a free hour or two while you are at it to get your foot in the door.

We got the news on Monday that there'll be retrenchments. Luckily I'm not affected but hell if I didn't sweat bullets during that whole meeting/presentation.

Even if you don't get retrenched going through the process and taking on more work, losing long time relationships as your colleagues are retrenched is still a hard thing. :(

I was retrenched once years ago, and faced the chop once in my previous company before, somehow, not being affected by the other one they ran last year. Ended up leaving and getting another job as it was, but those 3 hours waiting to be told I wasn't affected were bad. Unnecessary worry. You get told it's going to be run, and then told you will know at some stage in the next day or 2.
Why not just inform people the email is coming out immediately after the announcement?

Hope you guys find jobs, I really do. The job market here is not good, so will be holding thumbs!

Final update May 2021

Hi everyone,

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread. :)

Just for content - I was retrenched in 2020 2 months after the first hard lockdown, and it has been rough, to say the least. Anxiety, uncertainty... It's been a ride.

I have been freelancing and did get some income between September 2020 and This month.

However as things have normalised I have been blessed with a new job that paid even higher than my job I got retrenched from, and basically skyrocketed me to an HoD position.

I am actually much, much better off and love the new oppertunity.

Somethings that I have learned in my short 30 years.
1. 90% of the stuff that worries me or gave me anxiety never happened.
2. Only death and taxes are inevitable.
3. Surround yourself with real people that care about you and who you care about.

And finally... It all works out in the end just stay tough. :)

So thank everyone in this community who tried to help out or who gave encouragement and support.

I hope you all are blessed with love, friendship and prosperity. :)
