Anyone have experience with Amazon Associates?

Hi everyone
I am starting out with a new site (primarily aimed at the US market) promoting Amazon products through their Associate program (that is what they call their affiliate program).

I would love to hear from anyone who has some experience with their program.

FYI, I was contemplating going with other vendors, seeing that Amazon offers a very low percentage commision, and their cookie only lasts for a day. But after having extensively read up on it, I believe Amazon are masters at both closing the sale, and upselling. And if you are an Amazon Associate, you get commission on all products bought by anyone you refer.

I have read of people running sites where nearly two thirds of their commision came from products that they were not promoting.

So, anyone with Amazon Associate experience out there?

I actually think Amazon affiliate program is capable of making some cash. I have a site about cellphone deals, I once included accessories a person can buy with a phone, I only did this with one article and I generated 3 sales in less than a month. If I was not a lazy bastard, I would do this on all the articles!

And you're right, none of the products I promoted were bought, but everything that was bought was cellphone related.
