I am considering getting an eee pc 701, want to use it for email and internet only.

anyone here have one? I want to load windows on mine (got a spare xp home license) so that I can use my phone as a modem (lg or samsung) if that is possible in Linux I might stick with Linux (no promises, but I have always wanted to use Linux). Only need Firefox and Thunderbird.

I see Digital planet has the 701 for just under R2300, I might just put some more ram in.

What do you think? Would you buy one?

Where are you gonna use the lappie? Are you going to be on the move a lot?

I just ask, cos it is very small. The keyboard is quite fiddly and takes getting used to...

If you are only gonna use it at home, might be better to get a bottom of the range fullsize laptop instead.

If you click on my blogs, I have a blog about when I had one. (which I have now sold).

I agree, the size (or lack thereof) is great for moving around. It's OK around the house, but not if used too often - the keyboard possibly , but definitely the screen, will soon irritate you.

All in all though a cool gadget, which I used quite a lot for surfing and mail in front of the TV. The screen got to me and I upgraded to the 900HA - it is truly awesome, 9" screen is perfect for a netbook imo

I want to use it on the move, got a good-ish (although long overdue for an upgrade) at the moment my on the go needs are being met by my lg ks360, but I am staring to strongly prefer Firefox over Opera Mini.

Well, i also want to know about data cards and phone software working on Linux. If this thing has no drivers or if it is too difficult for me to set up will go windowz.

I have the 901... great machine. Bought it in the UK for just over R 3 500.

But the screen and keybooad are still tiny, and it only has 2GB HDD space :( It didn't work for me, but clearly it works for some...

the 701 has a 4 GB hdd and with sd cards so cheap it really doesn't put me off.

The local pc shop has one, will check it out again tomorrow.

I have worked a little on one before and think they are cute.

Are you a chick? Don't get me wrong, it's just that the small keyboard is geared towards someone with smaller fingers - which women typically have.

I got an Acer One 3G last weeked.

8.9" screen ; 160GB HDD ; Intel Atom 1.6ghz ; 1GB RAM built in 7.2mbps/1.4mbps 3G and Windows XP. I love it )

That is much more like it. How much did that set you back though?

I'm loving 'mine'. We got one for my mom - the 4G/701WC with XP one. Neither of us got a problem with it. I got a 4GB SDHC Class 6 with this one so 'space' ain't a problem for normal mobile use. I might get a 8/16GB one when the prices drop a bit. Also looking at upgrading the ram.

The keyboard took some time to get used to, but I used it without a hitch the whole time while we were on vacation. My mom ain't used to laptops so we just got her a USB mouse.

I have medium sized hands thank you very much :)

And no, I am not a chick. My full sized laptop is heavy enough to kill someone with if you were to hit them with it. Want something inconspicuous to carry around, you see I have this problem.

I think I am addicted to the Internet, especially to forums and RSS feeds and email, can't forget email :D

It's either get this or a blackberry, but I am sure that I will type easier on this than on a BB.

The nLited'd XP only takes up 400MB on C:/.
I've got an 8GB SDHC card.

I only use it for typing notes, Encarta, random video's, arcade emulaters. etc

maybe I am just a total n00b in this field, but what is nLite?

Google: nLite XP for EEEPC
