Anyone hosting their data on Ubuntu server as apposed to Windows Server?

Couple videos popping up on my youtube feed on comparisons to having Data on Linux server instead of Windows server.

Snapshotting and replication being easier with ZFS or BTRS, Windows has VSS.
I see 45 drives have come out with snapshield to protect against ransomware, pretty neat, they use a personal version of Cockpit-Project.

For giggles I setup Cockpit-Project with some of 45 drives plugins on ubuntu server, created samba shares etc and performance is very good.
setup firewalld etc.

Only thing I cant find is how get real-time stats on what files are being accessed say by users?

watch smbstatus - is pretty skimp
Snapshots and recovery of works damn well, almost too fast to be true.

ZFS will always trump VSS as ZFS was built for snapshots (even if VSS predate ZFS with about +/-2 years). VSS was hacked into NTFS so you are limited to where ZFS is unlimited.

ZFS is also better than BTRS as it is tried and tested and offers more than BTRS.

Have you tried using auditctl?

I'm not running any Linux file servers at the moment but I did have an HP N54 Microserver running Nas4Free for a few years and it was rock solid.

45 Drives are cool. If you haven't already, check out Tom Lawrence's channel, he has quite a lot of content on TrueNas.

Use various ubuntu desktop flavours for samba shares. Main reasons are that windows viruses don't work on Linux hence no corruption of data, uptime is excellent and barely uses resources. I've ran an instance of Ubuntu server with samba (non-desktop version) on under 200mb ram in the past. Upgrading versions via CLI is also fairly easy.
