Anyone using the Antenna Addon? RE: Antenna Performance.

Thanks

my original questions have not been answered. So by this I must conclude that there are no people using the Antenna addon. !?

in my gang we use bandannas, not antennas, sorry G
GuRu, I think you needs 2 takes the hint that Sytze provided withem linksies ;).

Now for something completely o/t [well sort of] I was flipping through channels just now, and on SABC1, there was a poor goat that broke free [had been tied up with some wire cable round its horns/head], anyways there was this long piece of wire protruding vertically from the goat's head, and the goat was running about trying to avoid being lunch or something, well the thought dawned on me that the goat looked a lot like one o' them tele-tubbies coming down from a high of sorts & got freaked out by the weird sun in the sky...

can I just say something, back in the day when I was a little, lets say... not sobre I watched the telly tubbies for 3 straight hours, it was like a marathon or something, anyways I finally figured it out.... the baby face, in the sun is the baby dreaming and the tellytubby land was his dream world, each telly tubby represents apart of his phsycee, like the gay one is his feminine side, the green ninja one is his masculan/asian side etc etc its like really deep, in one episode there was a whole religious good vs evil undertone, it was hectic. I'm still not sure why they have telivisions instead of bellybuttons, but other than that it actually makes perfect sense

It works we had no reception watso ever and it now gives us
3-5 dots (50-100%).

I found it was particularly directional and only worked if pointed in one direction.

Doesn't look at all water proof try the plastic bag over theory.

You will not get any speed increase if you have already 80-100%

I'm in Douglasdale / Fourways and get just about no signal indoors.

I got the antenae today for R599 ex vat, stuck it outside and now I get 100% signal
and downloads of 68k/sec from microsoft.com!

I also use iBurst in Midrand and get excellent speeds with just the pcmcia card.

I had serious buyers remorse before I got the antennae... but now i'm happy!!

Adding to last post I had no reception: inside or outside anywhere and now i do.

To the waterproof thing:
The front is sealed off ----

that has got to be the funniest **** i have ever read...

sorry didn't finish
sealed off like so

but the back has holes for mounting so water can get in through the back
as to whether the inside is water proof after you open it someone else can have a look.

Don't think you'll be able to download and do all sorts of wonderful things, thats out of the question. I live just across the road from "not so nice base station." I always connect there, I can buy the antenna & try it but if it doesn't work its waist of money. If i had the options to choose what base station I can connect to then I'd buy the antenna.

in that case: R600 bucks worth it!!!

Guru, Friendly advice, why waste R600 OR SO, on peace of S***T that might not even work, what you want to do download or do what with the antenna what you hope to accomplish purchase the antenna, I want to know really.

I Might be looking into getting Satellite dish and using that :P
Will get better results im sure of it :P

Seburn / Anton / Anton55 thank you for replying to my questions.
I am merely trying to find out whether these things are working or just a waste of money.
My UTD is mounted on a pole outside inside a waterproof case (from Communica braamfontein ) and this greatly improved speeds as well as signal .The whole thing cost under R200-00.

They did the demo at my house with the antenna (since the basestation is not live yet) and it works. Very directional but it works.

I have one issue to raise though. Do you realize that you could damage your modem with a homemade antenna. Consider that there could be an impedance mismatch. Unless you're using test equipment to design the antenna with, an impedance mismatch causes the SWR to be high which causes the following

* The modem transmits at excessive power levels to try and get past the mismatch
* The RF radiated into the air is less as some of it is lost in the cable, or reflected back
* The mismatch reflects RF back into the PA of the modem, which will, over time,
damage it.

Hi Kei

I am a bit confused, when you say "homemade antenna" do you mean the wet-11 tinfoil effort (parabolic reflector)?

No not that, I was referring to the impression that I got from some people here that they were using a piece of wire on their modems. Someone else a while ago mentioned damaging his modem in an attempt to solder an external antenna onto the UTD

Well, when I get my UTD and antenna (later today by the looks of things) I'll play with it and let you know what I find. I am going to do something similar to the "wardrive" that happened last year. I wanna try out a few towers, and see how well they work, etc..

Ok, I must have missed the posts about attaching a piece of wire to an iBurst modem, however who could forget the Source of UTD destruction thread - even immortalised in the FAQ thread as something not to do & to learn from [no offence Source, but your experience is something that others should not attempt, and your experience is positive in that sense ;)].

As far as testing out certain base-stations goes, a bit more complex, you actually need to test each base station from different points radiating out from each base-station.

I like the bit about the goat ...i will bet it gets very skittish when there is lightening around ... :D
