Everything set up nicely now on my end. Connected to my main media server which shuts down any running VM's, then initiates shutdown command to my pfSense box and the main server itself.

Set up NotifyMyAndroid notifications to tell me whats up.

This looks good. Just starting to read up on UPS now. Ideally I want something that allows PC and server to shut down when power fails...but also to keep wifi router running for 2-3 hours. Possible with one of these BackUPS APC devices?

Use an APC smart ups, this will do exactly what you want.

Thanks. I didn't explain it properly, server is for music only, a basic Proliant Microserver. I guess I need a very simple setup, should just have sufficient juice.

If router is supplied with 5V DC you don't need UPS. Simple 12V->5V converter like car cellphone charger with 2A maximum load will do it - more energy efficient and you can use old car battery which doesn't crank alternator anymore.
You only need UPS if you need clean shutdown.

If you have load shedding, would the local DSLAM also fall down i.e. is there any point in powering a ADSL modem/wifi router?

ADSL should not fall over...the old exchanges used to have hours of backup. The new ones seem a little more shaky in that regard...but I think you can still safely assume that things will be OK that side.

Thats a gut feeling more than actual knowledge...
